Perpetuating that philosophy can be a challenge, but the Arts Council and other local organizations do their part to make it happen. One of the ways they do this is through 4th Friday celebrations. This month, 4th Friday falls on Feb. 22 and there are plenty of events scheduled that will make it worth the trip downtown. The Arts Council open the 13th Annual Cumberland County High School Juried Exhibition. The exhibit, which is presented by the Cumberland County School System���s Arts Education Program, will be on display through March 1. An opening reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 22, featuring the Army Ground Forces Band���s rock band Loose Cannons. The exhibit showcases the works of students in grades 9-12. ���For students, this is an excellent opportunity to experience having their art reviewed by a judge. It also helps them prepare their portfolios for college admission and gives them a better understanding of how art can be pursued at a professional level,��� said Mary Kinney, Arts Council Fayetteville Cumberland County marketing director. ���Participating in the exhibition makes it possible for students to learn the important skills of critical thinking, making connections, expressing diversity and solving problems creatively, which will serve them in all facets of life. Artists in all mediums are invited to a special open house and reception. The invitation includes community and regional artists, art professors and teachers and art students. The artists meet and greet is scheduled from 4:30 to 8 p.m. The meet and greet ���ows right into the 4th Friday celebration, which includes an abstract challenge by Cape Fear Studios member artists.
