Curaco Buss dies at age 80 (AP) — Jerry Buss built a glittering life at the intersection of sports and Hollywood. After growing up in poverty in Wyoming, he earned success in academia, aerospace and real estate before discovering his favorite vocation when he bought the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. While Buss wrote the checks and fostered partnerships with two generations of basketball greats, the Lakers won 10 NBA titles and became a glamorous worldwide brand. Buss, who shepherded his NBA team from the Showtime dynasty of the 1980s to the current Bryant era while becoming one of the most important and successful owners in pro sports, died Monday. He was 80. "His impact is felt worldwide," said Kobe Bryant, who has spent nearly half his life working for Buss. Tuesday February 19, 2013 Case wins division title Classic 29 Corning Sports 1B OROVILLE — Apparently, you wouldn't like Wyatt Wyckoff when he's angry. And you certainly wouldn't want to wrestle him when he is because even when's he "a little bit" fired up it's more than enough. The Paradise High sophomore took a head slap from Foothill's Zeke Andrade after the opening whistle of the 126-pound final at the Northern Section Division I Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Oroville High. "I wanted to stick it to him a little bit harder then," said Wyckoff, the eighthranked grappler in the state by TheCaliforniaWrestler.com. In other words, the slap was not a real good idea by Andrade, who entered the most anticipated final of the day ranked 11th in the state. Stick it to him? More like Hulk smash. While his Paradise singlet was green enough for the Miniature Hulk, even if he couldn't be, Wyckoff didn't take long to assert his dominance. After a two-point takedown just before the two went out of the circle, Wyckoff then used the extra motivation. Wyckoff climbed up on Andrade and forced him down, slamming him to the mat. "It was a simple redrop and he turned into it, which made it look bigger," Wyckoff said. It must have felt big to Andrade, who has battled a back injury that limited him during the season, as he had to take an injury timeout. He took another after the second round and couldn't continue, giving Wyckoff the win by injury default after he had built a 4-1 advantage. Wyckoff, the defending section champion at 113, wasn't the only impressive winner Saturday. Red Bluff's Kyle Case beat Chico's Jerome Munoz 5-0 to become the 154pound champion. Case was one of eight Spartans to qualify for this week's Masters section championship at Redding Civic Auditorium. The meet runs Friday and Saturday. Joining Case in Redding will be Miguel Blanchard (5th at 113), Dalton Gutierrez (3rd at 120), Kyle Crisel (3rd at 160), Tucker Gulliford (4th at 170), Cody Clinger (4th at 182), Erik Fulk (3rd at 195) and Ben Ziegler (4th at 220). The Corning Cardinals placed seven wrestlers at divisionals, but will have eight compete at Masters after Devon Hiller earned a Wild Card seed. The rest of the Cardinals competing in Redding will be Hector Valencia (6th at 120), Josh Shults (3rd at 126), Seth Danielson (6th at 132), Evan McFadden (5th at 170), Juan Ruiz (6th at 182), Calvin Abel (6th at 195) and Braulio Ruiz (6th at 285). At the Division III-IV Championships in Durham Saturday, Los Molinos' Gabe Wabs finished fourth at 120 pounds to qualify for Masters. Back at the D-I meet it was once again all Chico. The Panthers won the team competition for a fifth straight season. Chico's depth across weight classes was evident as 11 of the 14 finals featured a Panther wrestler with four of them — Morgan Sauseda at 106, Cordero Rios at 160, Sam Miller at 182 and Aaron Bates at 195 — taking titles. "I think we just keep setting these goals and we keep attaining them," Panthers coach Keith Rollins said. Chico totaled 244.5 points. Paradise, which had four finalists and three champions, was second with 200. Pleasant Valley, which had one finalist in Cody Young at 220, took third with 128, one point ahead of fourth-place Shasta. Shasta was fourth with 127 points followed by Foothill with 121.5 and Red Bluff at 119.5 points. Enterprise was seventh with 88 points, just ahead of host Oroville with 83 points, who had three finalists, including Michael Ripley who won the 132 title with a 30-second pin of Enterprise's Michael Lee. Las Plumas was ninth at 56.5, and Corning was 10th with 54 as neither had a finalist. The top six in each weight class advanced to the masters meet. There the top three will advance to the state meet. Several winners Saturday are aiming for that coveted section title along with a state berth. In the 106 final, Sauseda bested Paradise's Logan Hoskins by a score of 83, a week after Hoskins won 8-0 at the Eastern Athletic League final and 4-3 at 113 in the dual between the schools. "We just really focused on the game plan. A lot of fakes and motions," Sauseda said. At 160, Rios was able to do pretty much anything he wanted, getting a two-point takedown 28 seconds in and just kept adding to the total. He won by major decision at 13-1 against Oroville's Jacob Thornton. "Everything started with double legs. That's my bread and butter the past few weeks," Rios said. At 182, Miller rallied after getting out of position on a knee pick and trailed Shasta's Taylor Halsey 5-0. Miller, though, rallied, tying the match at 5-5 before pinning Halsey with 20 seconds left in the second round. "I went for an arm bar and I ran his chin into his ear and turned him over," Miller said. The 195 final was what Rollins called his highlight of the day. Bates pulled off a hard-fought victory, knocking off Oroville's Dalton Scism 5-4 despite trailing 4-1 in the second round. "He really has the heart of the lion," Rollins said. Bates escaped three times and continued from there, getting the two-point takedown in the third to complete the comeback. "I got his legs. Just tire him out and make him work. I thought it was going to going to go overtime. That's what I was prepared for," Bates said. "It shows if you just keep on pushing forward you can accomplish anything." In the other finals: • 113: Shasta's Matt Smull pinned Chico's Cameron Leary at 4:29. • 120: Foothill's Jaxon Fitzgerald registered a technical fall of Chico's Jared Alves at 16-0. • 138: Paradise's Markham Odell edged Chico's Joseph Moure 4-2 in overtime, getting the first takedown in extra time. • 145: Shasta's Preston Wallers won by injury default as Chico's Jesse Chambers, in his first action of the season after injuring his right ankle in the Almond Bowl, played it safe and decided not to risk taxing the ankle before masters. • 170: Paradise's Keefer Fulton beat Chico's Caleb Jorgensen 5-0 as Fulton broke through a scoreless match with a two-point near-fall at the end of the second round. • 220: PV's Young made Evan Dahlquist, ranked seventh in the state, work for a 1-0 victory, which came from an escape after the Foothill wrestler started the second round in the down position. • 285: Foothill's Wyatt Landreth pinned Chico's Malik Hopkins 1:28 into the first round. Joseph Shufflberger and Rich Greene contributed to this report. Masters pairings 106: Corning's Devon Hiller avoided the big names and faces Sutter's Gage Kim in the first round. Kim finished second at D-2. The bracket features Logan Hoskins (PAR), Morgan Sauseda (CHI) and Hugo Punzo (ORL), all of whom are ranked Top 25 in the state. 113: Red Bluff's Miguel Blanchard faces Paradise's Scott in the first round. Scott finished two spots ahead of Blanchard at D-1. Matt Smull (SHA) is a defending section champion and heavy favorite. Cameron Leary (CHI) and Kenny Jones (LAS) will be tough outs. 120: It's a Tehama County first round as Corning's Hector Valencia faces Red Bluff's Dalton Gutierrez. Lone Los Molinos wrestler Gabe Wabs has a tough draw in D-2 champion Haiden Johnson (GRI). 126: Corning's Josh Shults got a favorable draw and faces Jacob Owens (BIG) who finished third at D-3-4. Shults won't have to see favorite Wyatt Wyckoff until the third round. 132: Corning's Seth Danielson has the D 3-4 champion Ethan Dunn from Modoc in the first round. But a benefit is he is not on Oroville state-ranked wrestler Michael Ripley's bracket side. 152: Red Bluff's Kyle Case is ranked 37th in the state and might have the best shot for a Tehama County wrestler to reach state. He opens favorably against Juan Vera (BIG) who was fourth at D 34. He's on the same side of the bracket as Sutter's Alex Ingram, ranked 20th. The other side of the bracket features 7th ranked John Leal from Chester and Dustin Jesson, who just might be Case's biggest opposition for a state qualification spot. 160: Red Bluff's Kyle Crisel opens up against Lassen's Noah Lindeman, who finished sixth at D-2. Durham's Jake Wiley waits in the next round. Chico's Cordero Rios and Oroville's Jacob Thornton pose threats. 172: Red Bluff's Tucker Gulliford faces D-2 champion Riley Vickner from Sutter. He could face Corning's Evan McFadden in the second round if McFadden gets by D-2 runner-up Kalan Hastey from Wheatland. 182: Red Bluff's Cody Clinger has state-ranked, but slumping Dylan Hill in the first round. Corning's Juan Ruiz has Lassen's Jake Thiels. 195: Red Bluff's Erik Fulk gets Orland's Ben Howard, while Corning's Calvin Abel has West Valley's Zach Zambrrana. 220: Red Bluff's Ben Ziegler has the D-1 runner-up in a bracket featuring two Top 10 wrestlers. 285: Corning's Braulio Ruiz opens up against state-ranked Jacob Candelaria from Willows. Two of the Northern Section's more storied boys soccer programs clash tonight at 6 p.m. when Corning visits Shasta in a Division 1 playoff semifinal. After nearly a decade of the two schools playing the sport in different seasons, the Northern Section's soccer realignment has finally brought the Cardinals and Wolves together. Corning has made a section title game seven out of the past eight years, while Shasta was in the spring equivalent Wellington Cup for the past four years. Last year Shasta finished ranked 7th in the nation by MaxPreps for spring soccer teams and 2nd in California. This year the Wolves are 14-1-2 and the top seed. Corning earned the match by finishing 16-3-2 and knocking off Pleasant Valley 2-0 in the first round on a pair of brilliant free kicks by Diego Figueroa. Figueroa is tied for the Cardinals' goal scoring lead with Jayve Uriostegui. Both have netted a goal 20 times. Figueroa also has nine assists. Juan Serrano, Hector Loera, Mario Campos and Geovanni Garcia round out the scoring punch for a Cardinals team that has 17 goal scorers on it. Shasta is led by a pair of 10-goal scorers in Jordan Daniels and Odi Rizos. The Cardinals prefer a more open game having scored 101 times this year and conceding just 14. Shasta prefers a lower scoring game. The Wolves have scored 50 times and conceded just seven goals. Tough test for RB girls The Lady Spartans soccer team have had one of their best seasons in recent memory, finishing the regular season 12-2-2 and reaching the playoffs with a first round bye. But at 6 p.m. tonight at home they face one of the two teams to hand them a loss this season in the Chico Lady Panthers, who dispatched Enterprise 4-0 in the opening round. Chico beat Red Bluff 2-0 at a tournament on Dec. 7. The Lady Panthers have scored 106 goals and conceded 11 while amassing a 15-3-1 record. Four players, Katie Brown, Shelby Hiller, Hannah Mikles and Neala Cronin, were double-digit goal scorers. While Cassidy Murphy and Jennifer Wellman each had nine on the season. Red Bluff is led by their All-League defender Rachel Ward. The Lady Spartans have scored 45 goals and conceded 14, with Tabitha Gibson seeing most of the work in the net. Riley Graham had 20 goals to lead the Spartans. Alyssa Mena is the other primary scoring option with 10 goals. Laurel Shoop leads the team with seven assists. Lady Bulldogs open playoffs The Northern Section's February Madness of high school playoff basketball begins tonight with opening round games. The Los Molinos (5-19) girls are the first Tehama County team to tip off as they travel to second-seeded Weed (18-8) to open up the Division 5 playoffs. Full brackets can be found on Page 2B.
