Her mother and all of her friends, as well as her aunt, were Tri Deltas, so it was pretty much ingrained in her from birth. When the time came for Martha to go through recruitment at the University of Alabama, she thought she would join a different house to be "her own person." Though try as she might, Tri Delta proved "too cute and fun" for her not to join. "I was so honored they wanted me," Martha said. "There is a true bond that is for life with any of us who were Tri Deltas together. I know that sounds hokey, but the friendships you make and decisions (good and bad) you make with these friends shape you as a young adult. I would not trade anything for my time at Alabama with my ΔΔΔ friends." As an alumna, Martha remained heavily involved in Delta Mu's daily goings-on. She volunteered as recruitment (formerly rush) advisor for many years with some of her fellow alumnae. "I was always involved in recruitment while in school. A few years after graduation, I got involved on the alumna side helping with references (RECS) from my hometown of Birmingham. I took time off to raise my family and then eased back into it when my children were a little older. Wanting to help our chapter, and work with my friend and pledge sister, Julie Hall Friedman '79, I jumped back in on the advisor side. Things were changing so much in the recruiting world and the chapter needed more alumnae involvement. Anne Courtenay Davis '76 and Susan Hundley Waldrop '77 came on board shortly afterward and it just sort of took off." Martha would highly encourage more alumnae to get involved with Delta Mu, and even though it may seem overwhelming at first, she promises the experience will be more beneficial than you know. "I am SO grateful for all of the friendships that have developed during my years as an advisor; friendships with alumnae who I didn't already know, older and younger, Delta Mu and other chapters as well! "We are pretty much all the same, and I am so very proud of Delta Mu and the young women who were in the Chapter while I was there. We accomplished so much through a lot of changing times and hard work. It is such a treasure to keep up with so many of them as they grow and experience life. Words cannot express how much I cherish the opportunity to be aligned with such outstanding women." Martha and her husband, Chip, live in Birmingham, and have three children: Charlie, John and Mary Martha '18. She is in the process of planning her middle son's wedding, and trying to keep up with all of her kids' moves. You can contact Martha at marthagrizzle@me.com. "You will get more out of it than you could ever give."
