The perfect example is the work going on at our Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureau. No one works harder to attract visitors and guests to Fayetteville and Cumberland County than John Meroski, president/CEO of the Fayetteville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and his talented staff. Meroski also knows the frustrating reality that once a visitor arrives here it is the community's job and responsibility to promote its own attractions, assets and venues — all communities, all attractions and all venues. Yes, a stellar but simplistic concept that still remains elusive and somewhat evasive to many. Hence, 13 years ago, we worked with the CVB to nudge local attractions and business along by developing and refining an unique marketing tool we labeled the Pocket Guide. This small, beautiful, handy and convenient 3" x 5" resource reflected well on our community and became the perfect introduction and welcome greeting to the Fayetteville, Fort Bragg and Cumberland County area. In addition to being comprehensive and affordable, it was the CVB's unique marketing and distribution plan that kept the Pocket Guide relevant, in demand and front and center, which gave the product its nick name as the area's "First Responder" for information and hospitality. Comprehensive from school, church and medical listings to frequently called numbers and listings of local government offices and officials, the Pocket Guide is a valuable piece of marketing collateral. Another warm, effective and unique Friday February 8 Call 910.354.1679 Sunday February 10 Saturday February 9 24 / High 59° Low 39° Mostly Sunny 4 aspect of the Pocket Guide is that it presents personal and sincere welcome letters to our visiting guests and newcomers from Jimmy Keefe, chairman of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, Jan Spell, Doug Peters and Jeffrey Hunt (presidents of the Hope Mills, Spring Lake and Fayetteville Region Chamber of Commerce, respectively), the Cumberland County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Frank Till and the mayors of Fayetteville, Stedman, Eastover and Spring Lake. Now that's a welcome committee. Partner that with the best businesses, services and venues to be found in the area and you can see why we have already started creating and assembling the 2014 edition. However, we never stop refining or improving on how we can use the Pocket Guide to promote the community. Now the best has gotten even better. Sure it's small, easy to use and convenient. Yes, it's online at www. upandcomingweekly.com 24/7 with live hyper-links. Starting today, this free community resource has its own QR code and can be easily downloaded into your iPhone or PDA leaving the best the community has to offer in hospitality and information at your fingertips. Check it out. When it comes to making great first impressions the Pocket Guide has a successful, proven track record for being the "First Responder" for local information and hospitality. Don't take my word for it. Try it yourself. The Pocket Guide is free. Thanks to John Meroski and a caring community the best just keeps on getting "better."
