That didn't change Thursday afternoon, when the league-leading Cardinals romped the Yreka Miners 6-0 at Corning High School. Corning (13-3-2, 7-0-1 Northern Athletic League) controlled things early and often against the visiting Miners (4-8, 3-5 NAL) as the Cards, who fell in the Northern Section title game last year, bulldoze their way to the postseason. That's when Corning's talented attackers and defenders will be chal- lenged, Llamas said. Cardinals junior Jayve Uriostegui started Corning's relentless attack on Yreka, cleaning up a ball in the Miners' box and striking it for a goal in the ninth minute to give his team the only goal it'd need on the afternoon. Llamas said his defenders, three of which are sophomores, have been "awesome," and that they should be a force in the next two years. "The only people who don't like our defense are probably our goalies," he said. "They get bored." That defensive prowess was evident. The Miners, despite their keeper's constant shouts of "push!," played tentatively and had few real opportunities for See CARDS, page 2B SUPER BOWL XLVII Snowmobiler dies days after Colorado crash By PAT GRAHAM Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Caleb Moore was a Texas kid drawn to the snow, rehearsing complicated tricks on a snowmobile into a foam pit back home until they became second nature and ready for the mountains. With his younger brother following along and constantly pushing him, Moore became a rising talent in action sports. The innovative freestyle snowmobile rider, who was hurt in a crash at the Winter X Games in Colorado, died Thursday morning. He was 25. Moore had been undergoing care at a hospital in Grand Junction since the Jan. 24 crash. Family spokeswoman Chelsea Lawson confirmed his death, the first in the 18-year history of the X Games. ''He lived his life to the fullest. He was an inspiration,'' Lawson said. A former all-terrain vehicle racer, Moore switched over to snowmobiles as a teenager and quickly rose to the top of the sport. He won four Winter X Games medals, including a bronze last season when his younger brother, Colten, captured gold. Caleb Moore was attempting a backflip in the freestyle event in Aspen last week when the skis on his 450-pound snowmobile caught the lip of the landing area, sending him flying over the handlebars. Moore landed face first into the snow with his snowmobile rolling over him. Moore stayed down for quite some time, before walking off with help and going to a hospital to treat a concussion. Moore developed bleeding around his heart and was flown to a hospital in Grand Junction for See CRASH, page 2B MCT file photo San Francisco 49ers' David Akers (2) reacts to missing his second field goal attempt of the game against the Arizona Cardinals on Dec. 30. Akers prefers not to kick around frustrating season By SAM FARMER Los Angeles Times (MCT) NEW ORLEANS — The San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens are fairly evenly matched — capable quarterbacks, strong running games, stout defenses — so Super Bowl XLVII could well be decided by a field goal. That has to have the 49ers concerned, because field goals have been an unpredictable adventure for kicker David Akers this season. A season after he set an NFL season record with 44 field goals, Akers has missed a league-high 14 tries this season, including an indoor 38-yard try in the NFC title game at Atlanta. Had the 49ers reached the Super Bowl last season — and they were at the doorstep before losing in overtime to the New York Giants — a story line would have been about the reliable Akers, a six-time Pro Bowl kicker, going for the ring he didSee AKERS, page 2B
