Tuesday, January 29, 2013 – Daily News Free Medicare workshop Passages Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) is presenting a Welcome to Medicare workshop for those anticipating turning 65 this year and wanting to learn more about Medicare 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Red Bluff Community Center. Registration is required by calling 898-6716. This free workshop is designed for Boomers and others who will be new to Medicare this year who want to understand how their Medicare benefits work. Family members or caregivers are welcome to attend. Important questions that will be answered include: • What is Medicare? • Do I really need a Medicare Part D prescription plan? • How will my retiree plan work with my Medicare? • Are there programs available to lower my Medicare health and prescription costs? People who are new to Medicare will be deluged with information from different insurance companies marketing their products. Tatiana Fassieux, program manager for Passages HICAP warns signing up with the wrong plan, or not doing anything may cost new Medicare recipients thousands of dollars, and they may not be able to make changes if enrollment deadlines are missed. Reclamation requests nominations NAPA — The Bureau of Reclamation held a public meeting on January 17 to discuss the establishment of a Community Forum to promote public input regarding future recreation opportunities and services at Lake Berryessa. At the meeting, Reclamation identified 10 stakeholder groups that would be represented by a seat on the Forum:Local landowners/residents; Local ranchers; Local businesses; Land-based recreation; Waterbased recreation; Conservation Groups; Gateway Communities; Water Quality/Supply; Game and Fish Management; Public Services and Public Safety. Reclamation is requesting that stakeholder groups nominate individuals to represent the interests of their group. Self-nominations will also be accepted and should include a justification for wanting to represent a certain group. Nominations are request- ed by Thursday, Feb. 7, and should be in the form of a letter or email that outlines the interest and background of the nominee. Nominees should be individuals who can fairly represent the entire spectrum of an interest group, are results oriented, collaborative and courteous and have the ability to attend meetings at different locations and times. There will be no compensation for those selected to serve on the Forum. The purpose of the Forum is to promote communication and collaboration in implementing the Lake Berryessa Visitor Services Plan Record of Decision and address issues of mutual concern. The immediate focus of the Simpson for Seniors accepting students REDDING — Simpson University for Seniors is accepting students for spring classes that start Feb. 4. February courses include a study of the biblical book of Revelation (taught by Simpson professor Jack Painter) and an introductory course to Christian apologetics (taught by Simpson professor Brian Larsen). The classes meet from 10:20 to 11:20 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on Simpson's campus, for a total of 10 one-hour instructional sessions. Courses are taught by university professors and professionals in their field of expertise, and there are no tests, grades or homework. Other topics this spring (March and April) include a historical geography of Israel; an exploration of global music; a study of Jewish leader Flavius Josephus; and a deeper look at author C.S. Lewis. 5B Forum is to establish recreation within the Lake Berryessa concession areas as quickly and efficiently as possible. Reclamation anticipates holding regularly scheduled Forum meetings as plans are being developed and put in place for visitor services and recreation at Lake Berryessa during the 2013 recreation season. Reclamation's goal continues to be to provide safe and enjoyable recreation experiences for visitors to Lake Berryessa. Through its Bright Minds Scholarship program, PG&E will award up to $1 million in scholarships to enable high school, community college and "non-traditional" students to complete their higher education paths. Bright Minds scholarship winners will receive full-ride scholarships of up to $30,000 per year; program finalists will receive $2,500 towards their studies. In addition to the scholarship opportunities available through the PG&E Bright Minds program, the PG&E Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are also accepting applications for a wide variety of scholarships. "PG&E believes that advancing educational opportunities is one of the most important ways we can give back to the communities where we deliver gas and electricity," said Ezra Garrett, vice president of community relations and chief sustainability officer for PG&E. "The Bright Minds Scholarship program will provide deserving students with the means to advance their learning and reach their full potential through the power of education." In 2012, PG&E awarded Bright Minds scholarships of up to $30,000 to 100 students throughout Northern and Central California. Scholarship recipients included high school seniors, current college students and adults returning to college. One scholarship recipient from Livermore was a veteran of the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another recipient from Bakersfield had been homeless at one time prior to turning her life around. The PG&E Bright Minds scholarships will be awarded based on a combined demonstration of community leadership, personal triumph, financial need and academic achievement. Eligible students will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the duration of the 2013-2014 academic year. PG&E's ERG scholarships have provided more than $2.5 million to hundreds of recipients throughout northern and central California since 1989. In 2012, ERGs awarded $302,000 in scholarships to 163 deserving students. The awards set a new record, surpassing the prior year's $289,000 in scholarships.
