One of my first experiences with house decorations was during my first year living in the chapter house when Ivan Sue '73 designed a first-place winning house decoration. I re- member it was a lot of work to put together, and a good deal of safety fea- tures were put in. But before Ivan's work, there was the design work done by Frank Lindberg '66, who also designed the house decorations. In fact, Frank's work on the Illinois Alpha Homecoming house decoration won Illi- nois Alpha the All-University Grand Prize for House Decorations as well as the Interfraternity division House Decorations first prize in 1963. Frank also construct- ed "SigEp Sam," a great- er-than-life-size-caricature. Perhaps you've seen "SigEp Sam" at Illinois Alpha. He's made appearances around Homecoming, recruitment, and New Student Week. Unfor- tunately, several years ago, Sam met his demise when he was stolen by another fraternity, broken up, and later discovered, thanks to Shawn Dalgleish '81 and Lloyd Murphy '78. Fraternally, John Vercellino '75 "SigEp Sam" was constructed by Frank Lindberg '66, and was a staple of Illinois Alpha's Homecoming decorations.
