2 Lambda Lamp C ol. Scott S. Preston '97 began looking at fraternities coming out of high school, and after contacting Lambda Chi Alpha he was visited by Brian Clark '94. Brian told him about Missouri S&T, Alpha-Delta Zeta, and his internship at the time. "My parents and I were impressed with Brian's presentation and the net- working opportunities he described," Scott re- calls, "so LCA seemed like the best fit for me." Taking on various Chapter roles during and after his time in Rolla, Scott learned valuable life and leadership lessons through LCA. Scott graduated with a bachelor's in civil engi- neering and, having served in ROTC, immediate- ly joined the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant. Now a colonel, Scott completed his assignment on the Army Staff in the Pentagon and is now attending the Marine Corps War College. Having held offices in the Chapter, Scott feels LCA taught him valuable principles, both on a personal level and at government and military levels. "Being a treasurer taught me to handle a budget, both for myself and each officer. Living with 50 other men teaches you conflict resolution and leadership skills. You learn to work with people and to be more harsh or relaxed in your leadership as necessary." His post-graduate involvement with Alpha-Delta Zeta began in 2006 when he joined the Housing Corporation as secretary, helping get alumni directly involved in Chapter House maintenance before the spring semester began. In 2015, Scott became the Chapter adviser, following in the footsteps of mentor Col. Edward Owsley, who served as adviser for about 30 years. Scott notes that they have seen excellent new member classes of 27 and 28 in the last two years. "The Chapter House renovation has sparked a new sense of pride, and the men are focused on being the best Chapter through sports, grades, and campus involvement." He is also proud of the recently established alum- ni advisory board, which consists of nine broth- ers. "The idea is that undergraduates can con- sult this board for advice to help visualize their goals," Scott explained. "For example, a new treasurer will have a mentor on the board who they can call up for reference and advice. We've pushed for this program for the past year and are starting to see results." Scott pointed to former President Scott Dye '94, who served in the Army before college, as a good influence during his time in the Chapter. To this day he regularly keeps in touch with Bill Stoltz '68, Kevin Schwalje '96, and Jason George '97, and he has fond memories of serving as the Chapter's St. Pat's committee representative and participating in friendly fraternity rivalries in the Burning of the Greeks. As wonderful as those memories are, Scott stated that Lambda Chi Alpha International is "not your father's fraternity" any- more, having greatly improved its support to the chapters in the last 20 years. "LCA is now a more inclusive organization, setting young men on the right path and teaching them skills they can use in their professional, civic, and personal lives. I'd encourage any alumnus to check in and see how they can help students." Scott lives in Alexandria, Va., with his wife, Christy, and two children, Bailey (13) and Ethan (8). An Eagle Scout, he serves as a local Cub Scout den leader and would love for his children to consider Greek life, as it has many values in common with the Boy Scouts. In his spare time, Scott is an automobile enthusiast and enjoys collecting comic books, music, video games, and more. Scott can be reached at preston_scott@yahoo.com.
