Billings, MT & Quartzsite, AZ The Quartzsite Museum has returned to our win- ter hours of Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. There are a lot of exciting things hap- pening at the Museum this season and we hope folks will stop by and see us. We have a new docent this year, Kathleen Winters. Kathleen has been volunteering at the museum for several years and has some fun historical facts to share. Please stop by to welcome Kathleen. We hope everyone enjoyed the Buck Connors Western Days celebration and suggest that you might fi nd our exhibit regarding Buck interest- ing. Included in that event was our fi rst "fi eld trip" which was a Quartzsite Pioneer Tour. Thir- ty-six people attended. More fi eld trips will be announced throughout the season. This year we have partnered with the Friends of the Library to present fi ve evening speakers throughout the season. The schedule of all the speakers is located elsewhere in this paper. Our fi rst presentation will be on Thursday December 6 at 7 pm at the Townhall. The topic is "Set in Stone but not in Meaning, Southwestern Indian Rock Art". Our speaker, Allen Dart, is an archeologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. He will be discussing pictographs and petroglyphs and their differing interpretations. This presentation is funded by a generous grant from Arizona Humanities. The evening promises to be informative and thought provoking on a topic that is close to home in Quartzsite. We recently learned that we have been awarded a small grant from the Arizona Historical Soci- ety. That grant is to help us enrich our program- ing and outreach to encourage a more active involvement by our community. Many of our younger generations have been less involved in preserving history and with the assistance of the grant we hope to promote a renewed interest in the past. There will be more information about this in future articles. Last year our trivia question in each issue was well received, so we will continue this year. No prizes, just pride in knowing that you know about some of the historical issues in your community. So, keep- ing with the Buck Connors theme, what was the item that disappeared from storage in Quartzsite that belonged to Buck Connors, and later resur- faced in a federal investigation? Kathleen can share that story with you. (No phone calls please!) We continue to need volunteers to assist with a variety of projects including exhibit cleaning and inventorying, computer input and general offi ce work, computer maintenance, special projects, docent assistance greeting the public and con- ducting tours, research of additional information regarding Quartzsite and general maintenance. Membership of $10 for a year is encouraged. As a member you will receive e-mail notices of com- ing events, have a vote in decisions being made regarding the Historical Society and Museum and participation in our fi eld trips is free. We are a non-profi t historical society. Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are al- ways welcome. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. We are locat- ed at 161 Main Street (parking in rear). Phone (928)927-5229. E-Mail QHS@TDS.net. We are continuing to recycle plastic, aluminum and glass, which can be dropped off any time at our front gate collection can. New volunteers welcome!!
