THE
THEN and NOW
100 Years Behind the Red Doors
Our Beginnings
Our Colorado Alpha Chapter was established on
February 20, 1904. To celebrate our founding, a
banquet was held at the old Bowen's Hotel on
1302 Walnut Street. Four years later, Colorado
Alpha received its charter at Conclave.
The newly restored charter plaque (thank you to
Chris Bittman '85) is located in the living room
of the house. Luckily, time has not taken much
of a toll and the infamous signature of "Uncle
Billy" is still readable.
Behind the Bright Red Doors
After 16 years of renting houses on "The Hill,"
the stars finally aligned in the 1920s for our very
own Chapter House at 1005 Broadway, known for
its bright red doors. It was a divine coincidence
that Justice Francis J. Knauss 1908's offices
were in the same building as the famous Denver
architect of our house, J.J. Benedict. The "Post
Office" (affectionately named during WWII) has
remained in our possession ever since.
As we approach our 100th year behind the red
doors at 1005 Broadway, a heart still shines
bright above the red doors. The house is filled
with brothers sharing Fraternity life and becom-
ing young men.
