THE DELTA NEWS 3 DELTA NU CHAPTER OF ALPHA TAU OMEGA F or Ralph "Jim" Scoular '65, his pride in the Delta Nu Chapter has endured over the years. Jim came to the University of North Dakota from Bismarck, N.D. "I originally joined because my best friend and I decided to pledge the same fraternity. I knew I wanted the structure and family feel of a fraternity to be part of my col- legiate experience. Now, the friendships I gained are part of my life permanently. At the time, I didn't know how large of an impact my pledge would have on ATW's land dating back to 1924." Jim is proud to form part of the ATW brother- hood and has demonstrated his full loyalty by giving back to the place where it all started for him. "During my time as an undergraduate, our members were respected by the university and its students, not only academically but athletical- ly as well." ATW has always been prominent on campus and Jim wants to ensure the legacy lives on at UND. During Jim's time at the chapter house, the Viet- nam War was taking place and facing vocal op- position from students on campus. "ere was tension all around us, but our brotherhood al- ways allowed us to respectfully discuss our dif- ferences." e live-in brotherhood is one of the biggest reasons for Jim's contribution to rebuild Delta Nu ATW Purchases Land to Build New House at Former Site 3000 University Ralph "Jim" Scoular '65 Calls on His Brothers the chapter house on 3000 University. "I was able to learn discipline and to respect individuals and property and allowed to practice religious free- dom." Jim believes that Delta Nu can fully open the doors of opportunity for many young men and families once the new ATW house is built. e new house will allow members to be men- tored by graduate ATWs. Jim attributes his success to ATW and the edu- cation he obtained through UND. In 1970, Jim began his career as an officer in the USAF, serv- ing in England, ailand, and the U.S. Upon serving and being honorably discharged, Jim started working for Iseman Mobile Homes. In 1992, Jim purchased the company and sold to his employees in 2010. In 2011, Jim created Jimsco, a corporation that purchases manufactured hous- ing communities. "Our family is very blessed." Jim knows that without his foundation through ATW, he would not be able to give back to his brothers in such a meaningful way. In the late '90s Jim visited the chapter, and aer witnessing the state of the house he and others were motivated to make it a better place for the brothers. On October 11, 2018, ATW was able to reacquire the land title that UND had obtained from ATW in 2015. "When I talk about ATW re- turning to 3000 University with my brothers, I remind them we must unite to allow the young men of Delta Nu to benefit the same way we did from the brotherhood." Jim understands how im- portant it is to have all his brothers engaged in the push to rebuild the ATW legacy. "We have the opportunity to positively change the active mem- bers' future if past brothers come together. is needs to happen now and we will get this done working together." Jim and his wife reside in Sioux Falls, S.D. Jim can be reached via email at rjscoular@gmail.com. brother. I am part of a chapter that was able to recharter and ultimately be able to rebuild our house." Even with his heavy course load, James values the time he can contribute to chapter philanthropic events. "I really appre- ciate the opportunity to have a yearly event with Safe Kids. Nothing is more rewarding than giving back to the community." In his time away from his studies, James serves as chaplain and is learning the importance of brotherhood engagement at weekly events. James is thankful for all the brothers who have been instrumental in his success with the Delta Nu Chapter. "I have had a great time in ATĪ© and am indebted to the orga- nization that has taught me so much." James can be reached at james.langfeld@und.edu. Additional oversight of the Chapter is now and will continue post construction to be provided by our alumni Board of Trustees. See a recent Delta News for more on the Board of Trustees, which replaces the old Chapter Advisor model and of- fers more "hands-on" involvement and oversight with the Chapter and the house. e Board will conduct their meeting in the new house. We have interviewed one and will be visiting with a second potential property management firm to provide various real estate services for the new house. ATW National, through its real es- tate subsidiary, also offers such a similar service, which is under study. Nothing has yet been con- firmed, but the expectation is that we will engage third-party professionals to assist with property management and rent collection matters. Lastly, and this suggestion comes from one of our own, is a very short, simple Code of Conduct, which all Delta Nu brothers will sign, regardless if they are living in the new house, whereby they pledge to treat and respect the ATW house as if it were their own. e Chapter has it's own addi- tional disciplinary code and sanctions. Can you expect the new house to be taken care of ? You betcha! Richard P.
