DTD e Shield Delta Tau Delta • Beta Alpha Chapter Alumni Newsletter • Fall 2018 Alumni Keep Traditions Alive Wide Open Golf Tournament—a Hole in One S ince 2010, Beta Alpha alumni have gathered on a Thursday in Sep- tember to reconnect over a day of golf. The day begins with an 11 a.m. tee time filled with player handicaps. While the golfing is fun, the bragging rights that come with a win have become the highlight of the event. After golf, Brothers take a trip to Bart Culver's '72 pond, south of Bloomington, to settle bets, tell more stories, jokes, and hopefully not fall or jump into the pond! Then everyone comes out to Dave Hobson's '71 house on Lake Lemon for cigars, a steak dinner, and a whole lot more camaraderie. You might ask why we now have it on a Thursday? That is because all of us are too busy with kids, grandkids, sports, weddings, and other family outings on the weekends. Beta Alpha means a lot to our alumni and they are excited for a future where Delta Tau Delta is back at Indi- ana and Brothers are again living in the Shelter. Jokes being told at the lake after a long day of golf! Tim Murphy '73, Tom Baas '73, George Bray '73, Mike Kafoure '72, and Bill Hebert '69 warming up at the Bloomington Country Club. A Lifelong Brotherhood Dave Hobson '71 Shares the Impact of Beta Alpha L ike many freshmen at Indiana, Dave Hobson '71 wanted a fra- ternity that was more laid back and built on friendships between brothers. He found just that in Beta Alpha. "I had a couple good friends from high school who were at the Shelter and really enjoyed it. Some of the other fraternities appeared to be a little too impressed with themselves. I think living with the different personalities during my years at the Shelter enabled me to better understand the diversity of students, parents, and fellow teachers during my many years in the teaching profession. As I look back at this time, developing lifelong friendships has been the most important benefit I have enjoyed as a Beta Alpha Brother." These friendships didn't end after four years at Indiana. Dave has kept in touch with many of his brothers throughout the last 47 years. "My longtime friend Mark Hogan '71, along with David Huffine '72, Bart Culver '72, and Mike Kafoure '72, have remained close. But, in the last several years I have had the chance to renew friendships with many more Brothers by way of a golf outing we now enjoy each September. As Stephan E. Ambrose wrote in his book Comrades, 'You can go days, months, years without seeing a friend, and resume the relationship with ease,' which is what has happened at the Wide Open. We just have way too much fun!" Looking at the future of Delta Tau Delta at Indiana, Dave has a positive outlook. "I hope that in the near future, undergradu- ates at Indiana have the opportunity to develop the lifelong friendships at Beta Alpha as we did in the early '70s. My hope is that Beta Alpha will endure and return, as other fraternities have at Indiana. With alum- ni like Kenneth Glass '76 leading the way, I am confident that Beta Alpha will be back at IU in the near future." Dave has been married to his wife, Sharon, for 47 years and they live near Bloomington on Lake Lemon. His proximity to Bloomington has allowed him to stay involved with Beta Alpha. They have two children and four grandchildren. His son lives in Bloomington, Ind., while his daughter is in Versailles, France. He has a bachelor's and master's degree from the school of education. He taught and coached for 33 years at Ben Davis Junior High School in Indianapolis. Since retiring from teaching 14 years ago, he has enjoyed working with and for his son in Timber Frame Construction and now farming. He hopes to see more Beta Alpha Brothers next September at the alumni Wide Open Golf Tournament. "Ski Free Bros!" Mike Kafoure '72, Dave Hobson '71, and Bart Culver '72 and the 2017 Wide Open. They lived together their senior year at Indiana. DTD
