6A Daily News – Friday, January 25, 2013 BULL & GELDING SALE Gelding sale preview By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Cowboys and those who are just horse fans alike gathered Thursday to have a first look at the 110 geldings and five mules signed up for the 51st Gelding Sale. Each horse will go through three different sections of dry, trail and cattleworks. In the first arena, the horse shows of its gait and ability to turn. In the second there are nine activities from going over various obstacles to dragging a log in which the rider selects three tasks for its horse to show off its strengths. The last arena was set up for riders to show their horse's ability with cattle by working the fence or roping them or for riders who chose not to use cattle to show off tricks. One rider stood atop her horse, swinging her rope in all directions while her horse calmly just stood still, not moving an inch. For some like Bob Knight of Red Bluff, it's a long-time tradition to come just to see what's available, he said. "I grew up on a ranch all my life," Knight said. "I've been coming for 60 years. I like to come see what they got. It's a very good sale. They've got quite a bunch this year, but they've always got some of the best horses." His sister's boys have two horses they bought from the sale a few years ago that live out at his Daily News photo by Julie Zeeb A rider takes RSR Driftwood Dipper through the paces Thursday during the gelding dry work, trail and cattle competition. Knight has also spent many years training horses and a few years with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association along with 25 years on a local drill team, he said. "When you look at a horse, you look for things like confirmation, how its built, how it's performances are and how it relates to the trainer," Knight said. "A horse will always tell you what it's going to do if you know how to read them." Ted Brown of Coats, Kan., who is attending the sale for the first time was sent to the sale by his employer. "I'm a cowboy," Coats said. "I make my living on horseback. I do daywork for different steer outfits." As it so happens, he didn't know it, but his son T.J. Brown of Ontario, Ore., whom he has not seen in five years, has a horse in the sale, Brown said. "This is a great show," Brown said. "Most of them are of a good quality, but it's a like a car. Everyone has different tastes." Competition will continue at 8 a.m. today with team roping, snaffle bit/hackamore and stock horse contests along with the selection of the Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse. Doors open for the gelding sale at 3:30 p.m. with Vic Woolery's famous tri tip barbecue being sold for $10 starting at 4 p.m. The sale, which costs $10 to attend, begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling the office at 5299443.
