N O T E S O F T H E L Y R E | P A G E 2 F or generations, Alpha Chi Omegas at the Phi Chapter have talked about the family atmosphere that they feel in the house. We all have memories shared with sisters and bonds created. But for the Collins family, this bond is even stronger. Peggy Malley Collins '75 joined Alpha Chi Omega in 1975 and has very fond memories. "I remember loving the chapter and all of the girls. I was thrilled when I was asked to join as a freshman." Her first daughter, Samantha Collins '07, remembers growing up and hearing stories about her mom's experience in Alpha Chi. "I couldn't wait to create my own legacy! My mom created lifelong friends and I wanted the same thing." A few years later, Rebecca Collins '16 was able to join the same sisterhood as her mom and sister. "I decided to join Alpha Chi Omega because it felt like home whenever I was there and was an extra special way to feel connected to my family. I can walk through the chapter house and look around knowing my sister and mother walked these same hallways. I know every ritual we do or every burger Friday dinner we have, my mother and sister did the same. I have met my best friends through Alpha Chi and continue to be amazed at the strong, amazing women that are in the chapter." When Samantha was a freshman, her mom visited during family weekend and when she got to the house, "she knew more about the place than I did! She told me stories as we walked from room to room. I loved calling her my sister. My mom pinned me at my initiation and I pinned my sister at her initiation with my badge. Pinning my sister with my badge was an incredible memory for me. I love our family legacy. I love being able to say that my mom is an ΑΧΩ and being able to brag about my little sister now." Peggy gets together with a group of sisters about every month for dinner. She's been able to connect with sisters in the Kansas City area and attend a few reunions as well. Looking back, being able to see her daughters go through Alpha Chi Omega has been almost as rewarding as being an undergraduate herself. "My two older sisters were in Alpha Chi so I was excited that Rebecca would have the same connection with Samantha as I did with my sisters. I loved having that shared connection with my daughters. It seems like I was in the chapter just yesterday and it's been so much fun watching my daughters go through it. Alpha Chis truly care for each other." Peggy received her bachelor's and master's degrees in early childhood special education and she works for Olathe Public Schools. Samantha followed in her mom's footsteps and is a middle school language arts and journalism teacher in the same school district. Rebecca is keeping the tradition alive not only as an Alpha Chi Omega at KU, but majoring in elementary education. For as much as the Collins family adores Alpha Chi Omega, they also share a love for the University of Kansas and want everyone to know, "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk – Go KU!"
