BETA BETA CHAPTER of ALPHA PHI at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Fall 2018 The Ivy M y mother made a decision in 1945 that changed the trajectory of several lives: she transferred to UCLA and was fortunate enough to accept a bid from Alpha Phi. I grew up meeting her sorority sisters and saw how important those relationships were as she and our family moved through at least six houses in my childhood. She shared her love of Alpha Phi when my sister headed off to Michigan State and excitedly accepted a bid as a legacy. I had no idea of the impact that Alpha Phi would have in my life when I also headed up to Michigan State a few years later and accepted a bid. I was fortunate enough to live in our beautiful house at 616 M.A.C. for my sophomore and junior years. Speaking of the house, in this newsletter you can see some pictures from our recent redecorating of the formal and entrance room, the Feronian. We began work the week after school finished, completing it as members moved back in mid- August for Polish Week. This remodel came after a survey of members who asked for more study space, also listing the formal as one of their least favorite spaces in the house. The House Corporation Board agreed that we needed more modern decorating while updating electrical and lighting to accommodate a myriad of digital devices and study habits for our members. We were fortunate that one of our board members, Lisa Luttmann '85, was a licensed decorator and oversaw the project from start to finish. Another board member, Nancy Weinert, Gamma Nu '78, was hugely instrumental in keeping this project on schedule all summer long. Kudos, ladies, for creating this young, fresh look for our house! Some of my greatest appreciation for Alpha Phi has been realized in the many years since I graduated. I've connected and re-connected with women who have become my closest friends and have enriched my life tremendously. When my daughter went away to college and became an Alpha Phi sister with my mom's pin, we were all over the moon. Talk about legacy and tears! Several years ago, I joined the House Corporation Board at Michigan State in an effort to give back. Best decision ever! So many memories and so much opportunity to pay it forward. I am proud of the legacy passed down from my mom so many years ago. More importantly, I'm proud of the Alpha Phi history of service, philanthropy, and development of young women at Beta Beta. Please consider using your legacy to give back to the future and invest in these wonderful women. You'll be glad you did!
