Tuesday, January 22, 2013 – Daily News 1B BULL & GELDING SALE Ranch rodeo results Opening day By JULIE ZEEB The 18th annual Jim Owens Memorial Ranch Rodeo Saturday saw the ENG Ranches, San Miguel, with Darrell Norcutt, Danny Leslie and Phillip Selby win the top team honors and silver buckles for the third year in a row. Second place to the Rice/Sparrowk Ranches, Clements, with Rich Rice, his son Daniel Rice and Lee Whitney. Third place to TX Bar Ranch, Red Bluff with JC Niesen, Wes Vansickle and Jeremy Pinheiro. Fourth place to Wine Glass Ranch, Janesville, with Elliot Dow, Richie Musthia, and Travis Stewart. Fifth place to Buckhorn Ranch, Williams, with Craig Boyd, Dan Holland and Jim Daxton. Sixth place to Cross Five Ranch, Walnut Grove with Clayton Bigilow, Jade Corkhill, and Clayton Brum. Top Ranch Horse was "Moose," a 6-year-old bay ridden by Craig Boyd of the Buckhorn Ranch. He won a silver bit donated by Bub Ragan Excavating, a handmade headstall DN Staff Writer The annual Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale will be held today through Saturday. "In the cattle business, when you say you are going to Red Bluff, everybody knows you mean the Red Bluff Bull Sale," Sale Manager Adam Owens said. "For many decades through changing times and uncertainties, one thing stays the same- the high quality and consistency of the bulls brought to you by our consignors." The 72-year-old Bull Sale does not take place until Saturday, but there are many other activities throughout the week, including the Gelding Sale and Stock Dog Sale. There are 485 bulls consigned for 20134, which is up about 20 from 2012, 110 geldings, which is down a few from the usual number, along with five mules and 20 stock dogs, Owens said. The Gelding Sale, which celebrates 51 years in 2013, costs $10 and will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Pauline Davis Pavilion. The Stock Dog Sale is 35 years young and begins with outside work by the Trinity Avenue parking lot at 1 p.m. on Wednesday and ends with the sale at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Don Smith Pavilion. The first official events begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Kick-off Breakfast and Beef Forum in the Don Smith Pavilion followed at 9:30 a.m. by the start of the sifting process. In 2012, there were 460 bulls consigned, however, only 344 were sold, averaging $3,615 in the sale, which netted $1.2 million. That was up about $206,000 over 2011 numbers. Top sales included Champion Charolais NR Madrid 050 consigned by Reis Livestock and Champion SimAngus Tex Built Right 0473 consigned by Teixeira Cattle Co's John Teixeira, which both sold for $7,900. Top selling breeds were Sim-Angus, Hereford and Angus with the Sim-Angus breed doing well. With only 11 bulls sold, the Sim-Angus averaged $4,636. There were 44 Herefords, averaging $4,392 each, and 193 Angus, averaging $3,434 each. For geldings, there were 87 sold, averaging $5,651 a piece with DMAC Agent Spoon, a 2006 red roan gelding, the highest selling gelding, bought for $25,000. Five mules were sold, averaging $3,940, at the gelding sale, which netted a total of $511,400. All events are held at the Tehama District Fairground including the trade show, which opens at noon on Wednesday, and Art Show Wine and Cheese Tasting from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. In the finals ENG Ranches won the calf branding with a time of 2.16.23 on three head. Darrell Norcutt scored 148 for 1st in ranch horse. Second in ranch sort- ing with 3 head in 1.17.87. No time in ranch doctoring. First in ranch counting with 100 head in 51.71 seconds. Danny Leslie was 2nd in calf roping with 20.86. Phillip Selby won the wildest bronc riding with a score of 91.
