THE CAL SIG Sigma Chi House Corporation P.O. Box 2101 Danville, CA 94526 Address Service Requested other dark times that had America divided on different racial and political issues. John vividly remembers the reactions of the teenagers that he and Patti worked with to King's assassination. "They came to school one day very, very up- set. My wife asked them, 'What's going on?'" John said. "The leader in the class said, 'Why did you kill the father of all black men?' That's how we learned about the assassination of Mar- tin Luther King." The concern of the students of what was taking place in America was something that stuck with John. They told him and Patti not to go back to America shortly after Kennedy was assassinated in June of 1968. John's political career has continued to take him out of the country over the past four decades, and he has recently been asked some of those same questions in regards to the political and ra- cial uproar in the United States. "In my travels most recently in Europe to visit with seven NATO countries to talk to them about America about NATO and the commitment, here we find once again the rest of the world going, 'What is happening in America?" John said. "What is this all about? This isn't the America that we knew.'" Although John has been very active on the po- litical front since his time as an undergraduate at Cal-Berkeley, he hasn't lost touch with his Alpha Beta brothers. John is thankful that he's been able to reconnect with more of his pledge brothers in recent years, and has greatly appreci- ated their support of his career. At one of the recent Alpha Beta reunions, John caught up with pledge brother Ed Crane '68, who is a libertarian and co-founder of Cato Insti- tute. The political views of John and Ed are quite different, but they enjoyed being able to reflect on their personal lives with each other. John re- spects that Ed and many other of his Alpha Beta brothers have continued the same mission that they had in college by actively trying to make the environment they're in a better place. "Just care deeply about your community, your state, nation and really the world. Just have a heart of service that (makes) you want to serve and want to be a value in the community and want to help," John said. "I really would call it a heart of service, a life of service. Then you will find many different opportunities to do that—ev- erything from teaching to firefighting to policing and maybe the Peace Corps or politics. But be a part of your community and be engaged."
