Fuchs '66 shares that in 2000 he began seminary studies while continuing to work in general aviation. Then in 2007, he undertook nine years of ordained ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ministry was a specialized, non-stipendiary call to work with homeless and mentally ill folks in downtown Portland through the not-for-profit known as Operation Nightwatch. Last year he retired from that ministry, "after leading more than 450 worship services and over 200 Bible studies with our folks, every one of which also provided a nutritious meal—all on a budget of 0 dollars and 00 cents. At the same time, our worship had a mission to the wider world. Each week, we gathered a small offering that by the end of the nine years had totaled more than $15,000. Every cent went out; everything from earthquake relief in Haiti to rebuilding typhoon damage in the Philippines to tornado damage in Joplin, Mo. Yes, homeless folks did that. They care. God is good." Roger and his wife, Jean, live in Portland, Ore., and he does aviation engineering work from home. E-mail: A65Roger@msn.com
