The Deke Newsletter 3 F rom developing lifelong friendships to learning valuable skills, George DuPaul '79 says Delta Kappa Epsilon membership has been integral to his life. And he has Bruce Fessenden '77 to thank for introducing him to the brotherhood. "I was living in Clark Hall my freshman year, and Bruce was the RA for my floor. He recruited several of us, including Gary Breitbord '79, Jim Connery '79, and Mike Scacca '79," says George. Going to fraternity events and connecting with the members led to George realizing Gamma Phi was the best fit for him. The Old Stone House was a home away from home while he studied for a degree in psychology, and the fraternity offered a support system that George is still grateful for. Serving the chapter as vice president and social chairman, as well as living in the chapter house ("Always having friends around was both a positive and a negative!"), helped George learn leadership skills, time management, and self-discipline, which have benefited him throughout his continued education and success after college. After earning a master's of science psychology and Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Rhode Island (URI), George began his career as a school psychologist with Stonington Public Schools. He then moved on to the Department of Psychology at URI as director of the Children's Learning Clinic and lecturer. In 1987, he became assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Massachusetts Medical Center. After five years, he joined Lehigh University in Pennsylvania as associate professor and later professor in the School Psychology Program. Tenured in 1995, George has also served in administrative roles, including school psychology program director and department chairman for the Department of Education and Human Services. In his 27 years with Lehigh, George has been principal or co-principal investigator on several federal and foundation research and training grants and received many awards and honors, including being named to the Children and Adults with ADHD Hall of Fame. In September 2018, he was appointed associate dean for research in the College of Education, responsible for "improving the robust research profile through supporting faculty and staff… that directly impacts practice in education and mental health services." While George's enviable and impressive career path is partially due to the solid foundation established at Wesleyan and ΔΚΕ, perhaps the most treasured result of his undergraduate days is the relationships developed at 276 High Street. His many memories are filled with parties, trips to Celtics-Knicks and Bruins-Rangers games, and the Eating Club. "Through the co-ed Eating Club, we developed equally strong friendships with the women on campus. Reinstating this is a great opportunity to build connections with other Wesleyan groups." George says what really stands out, however, are the "informal times. The late- night study sessions or just shooting the breeze and bonding. It was a tremendous experience." The men George grew close with then have remained best friends over the years. For this reason and to thank Deke, he has contributed to The Sesquicentennial Campaign. "The core of it is that being a Deke from Wesleyan is who I am. Almost 40 years later, we are literally friends for life.
