The Deke Newsletter GAMMA PHI CHAPTER AT WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY | FALL 2018 SECURING THE FUTURE OF GAMMA PHI THE SESQUICENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN Campaign Chairman Answers Your FAQs Feel Informed, Get Involved! B rothers, with this fall issue of e Deke Newsletter we want to share some answers to the questions we've most commonly heard since announcing e Sesquicentennial Campaign: Securing the Future of Gamma Phi in February. e campaign's success depends on you, me, and all brothers, and we want to ensure everyone feels informed. Below is an update to those FAQs and how you can support this worthy and important project. Q: How much has been raised so far? A: We have raised $2,688,381 thanks to the generosity of the 132 early donors. Our goal is to raise $4 million, which will renovate and endow the Old Stone House. The ultimate mission is to secure financial independence from the administration. Q: How can I donate? A: Use the enclosed pledge form to mail in your one-time gift or multi-year pledge. We hope you will consider making a minimum commitment of $5,000, which will rank you among our other generous donors listed on page 2. Q: Can I spread my payments over time? A: Yes, you have the option of spreading your total gift over five years at intervals that work best for you. For perspective, a $10,000 pledge is $166 a month when paid over five years— and would qualify you to be on the final donor plaque at the project's completion (though gifts of all size are certainly appreciated and encouraged). Q: When will construction begin? A: We are establishing the construction timeline for the first two phases and look forward to putting your generous donations to work. We are working to find the best, most fiscally responsible approach to have the Old Stone House ready for residents and look forward to sharing these plans soon. Q: What's new with the lawsuit? A: Kent Literary Club President Gary Breitbord '79 provides an update below on the lawsuit and what this means for our construction timeline and expected residency. It is a must-read! Now is the time to show your support! We need the Old Stone House to match our thriving membership, be a competitive option among other housing options, and, ultimately, be financially secure. We will be triumphant with your help! Join us today in preserving and continuing the fine tradition of ΔΚΕ at Wesleyan University. I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the fall season. On the legal front, the lawsuit continues to progress slowly through the court system. Last June the jury unanimously found for us on all five counts. As expected, the administration appealed and have filed their brief. Our counsel is completing our response, and we expect that to be filed shortly. A review of the Wesleyan brief submitted did not cover any new ground so we remain optimistic. Once our brief is filed, we anticipate that the appellate court will reach a decision by spring of 2019. As always, we stand ready to discuss a settlement with the administration at any time. First Two Phases Reviewed, Approved With the initial success of The Sesquicentennial Campaign, we are beginning the renovation of the ΔΚΕ house. Our goal is to have the house ready for occupancy by September 2019. The KLC board recently reviewed and approved the first two phases of the project, including documentation, engineering, and design. We will have a better idea of total costs, enabling us to prioritize the renovations. We will keep you updated as the project progresses. Active Chapter Doing Their Part The undergraduate brothers are thriving. They are an outstanding group of young men who impress us with their hard work and character. We have 47 young lions on our current roster. They are engaged in philanthropic efforts (including selling t-shirts at Homecoming) to support the MacDonough Elementary School in Middletown. They have also re-engaged with Dr. John Foubert, who will return to campus on December 9 to conduct his acclaimed One in Four Program, which includes sexual assault prevention and bystander intervention training. We have invited other members of the Wesleyan Greek community to participate in this program. We are excited to see ΔΚΕ continue to thrive on campus and hope to see you all again soon.
