The Deke Newsletter 5 Alumni News MYSTIC CIRCLE Spencer L. Plehaty '46, age 92, passed on to Mystic Circle August 4, 2017, in Boulder, Colo. Spencer graduated from Wesleyan University in 1948 with a B.A. in math and physics and New York University in 1953 with an M.E.E. in electronics. He served his country during World War II as an ensign in UDT-4, training in underwater demolition, reconnaissance, and mine disposal at Ft. Pierce, Fla. After the war was over, he transferred to USNR, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander before retiring in 1970. He frequently attended reunions of the UDT SEAL Association as late as 1998. His working career consisted of three years as an applied physicist with U.S. Naval Ordnance Lab and many years as a senior systems engineer with Norden, Div. United Aircraft Corp. Spencer resided in Darien, Conn., for most of his adult life and served faithfully on the Darien Representative Town Meeting for many years. As often as the weather would allow, he made the trek out to Colorado to be with family for Christmas and indulged in traditional Swedish dinners. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Svea, and his older brother, Carl W. Jr. He is survived by his nephew, Carl W. III, sister-in-law, Phyllis Plehaty, and several cousins. ALUMNI UPDATE H. Peter Deacon III '56 and his wife, Patricia, have been married for nearly 60 years and lived in Philadelphia almost 50. They have two sons, David and James, and four grandchildren. Pete retired in 1999 from chemical sales with Fuji and hasn't "earned a dime in the 21st century." E-mail: h.deac@verizon.net James M. McLean '56 lives in Albany, N.Y., and enjoys wintering in Tampa, Fla. He still plays a little golf and keeps in touch with Fraters H. Pete Deacon '56 and Frank Mitchell '56. Daley '57 and his wife, Barbara, reside in Trumbull, Conn., and have three children: Christopher, Timothy, and Mary Ellen. Bill is a retired marketing sales executive. E-mail: bdaley3030@charter.net George Kangas '60 will retire in December 2018 as president of his company, George Kangas & Associates, and is looking forward to fishing. He and his wife, Gail, live in Gurnee, Ill., and have two daughters, Susan and Polly. Their son, Scott, sadly passed away in 2012. Robert M. Thorndike '65 retired in 2007 as a professor emeritus, psychology at Western Washington University. During his career, he published nine books and numerous articles and monographs. He and his wife, Elva, live in Bellingham, Wash., and have two children, Tracy and Kristi. Bob had to give up skiing after knee replacements and is "now a happy golfer." Reisner '69 retired from New Jersey Superior Court as a judge in 2016. He now works as counsel to Scarinci Hollenbeck as a federal court mediator and arbitrator in Red Bank, where he lives. "Ted" Lindberg '70 is semi-retired and works part time as a clinical social worker. His specialty is family therapy, which he's practiced for 35 years and taught to psychiatric residents. Quigley '73 enjoyed the 45th reunion and seeing Charlie Cocores '74, Jim Raymond '73, and Scott Karsten '74. "Good to see the house open, but it does need a lot of work." This is his 14th year as volunteer defensive coordinator at Archbishop Stepinac H.S.; they won the NY State Catholic School title in 2017 for the second time in three years. He plays racquetball, travels, and watches sports, Boston teams in particular, when he has time. George and Judy have two sons: Glenn is director of basketball analytics for the Brooklyn Nets, and Jason is a senior research analyst at IHS Markit in Washington, D.C.
