Fall 2018 S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N AT C O L O R A D O S C H O O L O F M I N E S THE STOPE (Continued on page 2) 50 YEARS AND STILL STANDING Our Home at West Campus Road Celebrating Half a Century W hile Colorado Delta is considerably older and SigEp even older than that, this year marks the 50th anniversary of our Chapter House on West Campus Road. Fifty years of undergraduates, 50 years of events, 50 years of meals. Approximate math puts the number of meals served at our house at well over one million! And for all that use, the house is still standing. There certainly have been many updates and upgrades over that time—in fact, just this semester, we discovered the second sewer line, running through the Chapter room area, needed replacement all the way out. Thanks to our alumni and their generous donations a few years back, we overhauled the sewer line from the rooms out to the city along with some other projects. After some diligent work by Stace Arnston '76, the undergraduate house manager, and Dean Willis '72 writing a check, the line is fixed and hopefully soon the Chapter can resume use of the downstairs area. We all have fond memories of our time in the house. My connection is quite direct, as I never even lived in the residence halls. After receiving a "soft bid" at E-Days my senior year of high school, I decided to join and just moved straight in as a freshman. I spent my entire Mines career living in-house, including a bit longer into the summer after graduation as I finished up field session. Seems like that sort of experience, like so many others, is left to the memory book. But even with all the changes in SigEp and CSM, our house remains standing. Frankly, considering some of the stories I've heard from older alumni, that makes it an even more remarkable achievement! So as I reflect on the house and everything it represents, I'm honored to be its "owner" as the AVC's president. Our efforts as a board are basically 50/50 with stewardship of the actual house and mentoring of those connected to it during their time on campus. SigEp will continue to evolve, and the AVC will help the Chapter House evolve right along with it; so, my thanks goes out to the entire board for their time and knowledge in those pursuits. Finally, thanks to all of you who contribute! It is a very tangible way to foster an environment promoting SigEp as the best fraternity on campus. Fraternally, Eric Wilson '94 AVC President eric.wilson@thecpigroup.net Dedicated Brother Leaves Legacy of Service A rthur Biddle '61 passed unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep Sunday, May 6, and began his eternal journey with our Heavenly Father at the age of 78. Art graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1961. He served in the United States Army 9th Corps of Engineers from 1963 to 1965, stationed primarily in Germany. He had maintained active friendships with many of his Army buddies and their families throughout the rest of his life during Army reunions throughout the United States. Following his time with the Army, Art graduated from the University of Colorado Law School in 1968. Art met the love of his life, Carroll Sue Sherman, in 1968 while clerking for a federal judge in the 10th circuit federal court system and began his journey as a dedicated family man. He and Carroll were married in 1969 and had many adventures, including raising two sons, David and Mark. Art was very dedicated to his sons and actively shared experiences, which included many Y Indian Guides, scouting, camping, golfing, deer, antelope and quail hunting trips, fishing, and sporting adventures. Art and Carroll continued their passion for exploring the world on tours of Europe, Israel, New Zealand, Australia, South America, and North America over the past 20 years. Art maintained active involvement with his SigEp brothers throughout his life, serving as a board member for the SigEp CO Delta Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) from 1967, during construction of our current Chapter House, through 1974.
