Lezlee Masson, The Gold- en West Winds is the resi- dent woodwind quintet of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West, Travis AFB. This group of highly trained musicians has delighted numerous concert audiences through- out the western United States. The group will offer a free concert at the State Theatre in Red Bluff at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15. The versatile group per- forms a varied assortment of chamber music, ranging from the works of baroque masters to the ragtime of Scott Joplin — music that is ideal for all audiences. In addition to Air Force community relations con- certs, the Golden West Winds offers informative lecture and performance clinics to all levels of aspir- ing musicians. RBAAMay artist of the month By ANNE WHITEMAN Artist of the month of May for the Red Bluff Art Association is Janice Lee Perkins, a native Northern Californian. “Janice is a delightful person who follows her interest in creating beauti- ful art with determination,” said Kathy Brehm, RBAA president. “And she is suc- cessful.” Born in Sacramento, nee Draper, Perkins had a career in property manage- ment and real estate devel- opment following earning her Associate of Arts degree in Business. She enjoyed being of service to others, but it left little time for her own interests, which included art. She came from an artis- tic family. She enjoyed his involve- ment so much she wanted to participate in it herself. When she retired two years ago she sought to get involved in the arts locally. She met a friend, Bernice “I found the members so welcoming, warm, and interesting I decided to become a member,” she said. “I was inspired by their artwork and member Marjorie Curl referred me to Sandy Palmer, an art instructor in Cottonwood.” She began taking lessons since, though inspired, she had never had formal training. She was pleased to discover her first graphic artwork went well. She found Palmer’s inno- vation and encouragement was what she needed. Perkins had always wanted to paint with water- colors, but found them challenging. She still hopes to increase her skills in that area, but found her favorite medium is colored pencil. “I credit Bernice Cressy, Susana Roisenvit and Linda Yamas from RBAA for sharing their interest in Prisma Colored Pencils,” she said, “I guess I did inherit a natural abili- ty to draw and bringing in colored pencils is an extra bonus.” Perkins said that she would encourage any new artists to come to the group for a view into the local art community and to see the fun they have.
