Box 220 Red Bluff, CA 96080 Gun control Editor: I have been watching the debate about gun control, especially the Vice President's efforts lately, I just wanted to respond to some things I have seen and heard in the news. Let me start out by saying that I believe that the Second Amendment absolutely protects Americans from governmental gun seizures, etc. No one seriously suggests that it would be within the government's purview to try and seize legal firearms in this country, it simply won't happen. A lot of people are talking about outlawing military-style rifles, and I am sure that most law enforcement agencies would like to see most military style "assault" weapons off the streets, but they, in most cases, are legal to purchase and own and I do not advocate making these weapons illegal. The text of the Second Amendment reads; "Amendment II. A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." It is the "well regulated" part that I think needs to be looked at by all Americans, gun owners and non gun owners. There are some ideas being suggested that I find to be compelling ideas. The first deals with large capacity magazines for handguns and long guns. People with military type assault weapons have said that they use them for hunting, defense and target shooting, these are all legal and defensible reasons. But, whether hunting, defense or target shooting does not require more than a 10 round magazines, etc. Let's be honest, if a hunter can't hit his target in his first ten shots, he should not really be out hunting in the first place. Ten rounds per magazine for home protection seems like a reasonable number, there being no limit on the number of ten round magazines being in the possession of the homeowner. And regarding shooting at firing ranges, private land or very rural areas, etc., I don't see any reason that the gun owner would need or require more than one ten round magazine at a time. So I think this would be responsible and reasonable "gun control," the firearm laws of California already limit magazines to ten rounds. Any magazine larger than 10 rounds is simply not a requirement or need for legitimate firearm usage and should not be lawful to own or use in any circumstances. In regard to the ammunition itself, other reasonable and responsible actions could include barring the sale of ammunition, sometimes in very large quantities, over the internet. Why should large amounts of lethal ammunition be a mouse-click away for anyone to order without any type of background checks or other records that could be checked in case of the misuse of the ammunition in an illegally obtained firearm? Ammunition is freely available in almost all areas of California and the nation, so restricting internet sales would not seem to be a major problem for the vast majority of gun owners. California law already regulates sales and transfers of ammunition, lists persons prohibited from possessing ammunition (and firearms), minimum age for purchasing ammunition, ammunition sold at gun shows and "certain kinds of unreasonably dangerous ammunition." There is also the matter of "straw sales" of weapons by dealers to individuals who then illegally sell the firearm to unknown, unregistered, sometimes criminal gun buyers. Many times when a registered gun is used in a crime the gun owner can claim that the miserably in their effort to weapon was "stolen." I think it intervene during the ongoing is reasonable for responsible civil war in tiny Syria, which firearms owners to be required confirms the rumor, they to report any stolen firearm couldn't fight their way out of immediately, and have sanc- a paper bag. Commentary Toughing out the flu like a man By Sunday morning my voice sounded like Lindsay Lohan in rehab. How did I get like this? Oh, I know how it happened — because I'm too stubborn to listen to the sage advice of the Dr. Richard Wickenheisers of the world. I don't need no stupid flu shot. Flu shots are for babies, old ladies, hypochondriacs and sissies. I'm none of those things — quick where's my floral-patterned box of tissues and blankey. My toes are cold and I don't want to move. I think I might have pneumonia. I thought I could hold off this flu the manly way. As soon as the first symptom surfaced I purchased a carton of orange juice and downed the whole thing. That oughta do the trick. ACHOO! Wait, my own prescribed therapy to cure my own diagnosed illness didn't work? ACHOO! But I spent an hour on WebMD and that dude on Yahoo! Answers seemed so confident that if I just gargled salt water before bed I would be good to go the next day. ACHOO! OK the manly thing to do now is just head off to work and infect others Walking Dead style. Sure some of my co-workers will treat me like I have leprosy, but it's just a matter of time before they catch this thing anyway. Better sooner than later, I say. This happens every January.
