Gallery celebrates five years Music and refreshments will be featured at the Red Bluff Art Gallery at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, to mark the gallery's fifth anniversary. S i n g e r- s o n g w r i t e r s Jennifer O'Connor and Chris Brokaw will be providing the evening entertainment for the Anniversary Party. "We opened five years ago with an exhibit about Lassen Volcanic National Park and Superintendent Darlene Koontz cut the ribbon on opening night," said co-Director Anastasia Nelson. "Since then, we have provided over 186 exhibits of local artists as well as international artists. We've seen a few other galleries come and go, but as when we started, we are the only art gallery in Red Bluff." Co-Directors Nelson and her partner, artist Phil Dynan, attribute their success to several factors. "We've been really flexible, giving art class- es, doing framing, selling art supplies, and providing services like wedding photography and website building," Nelson said. "The combination is what has kept us going. Also, I think the variety of art including local and international artists has kept up local interest." Nelson is the art instructor for the local EScholar program. She holds an art degree from the University of California at Davis. Dynan has taught art for both the Davis Art Center and the Roseville Arts Center. Jennifer O'Connor is a New York-based singer and songwriter. Since her career began, O'Connor has toured the United States many times over, playing alongside bands such as Wilco, Cass McCombs, Silver Jews, The Mountain Goats, Damien Jurado, Feist, and Yo La Tengo. Her songs have appeared in numerous television shows and films such as Sons of Anarchy, The Ghost Whisperer, The Strangers and The Sensation of Sight. Her new CD, I Want What You Want, is available at www.kiamrecords.com. Chris Brokaw is perhaps best known for his work as the drummer in Codeine and the guitarist in Come, who made several albums in the 1990s for the labels Sub Pop and Matador that are considered landmarks in American independent rock music. This year he released the CD, Gambler's Ecstasy. The fifth anniversary celebration is open to the public and there is no charge. The gallery is at 601 Walnut St. in Red Bluff and online at w w w.
