GAMMA PHI BETA 3 W ith the increase in the number of KU Gamma Phis (we currently have 226 members) and the rising costs of a college education, more members of Sigma Chapter are applying for scholarships and financial aid every year. We are fortunate to have several named endowments through the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation and the KU Endowment Association that are awarded annually to very deserving women in our chapter: • Jane Benton French—Scholarship, Fellowship, and Leadership Education/ Convention Endowments • Marynell Dyatt Reece Campus Leadership Scholarship Endowment • Susan Moore Brier Palmer Scholarship Endowment • Vera Virginia Hill Thayer Scholarship Endowment Unfortunately, we are unable to grant scholar- ships to all that apply and meet the criteria and often emergency situations arise during the year that require a member to give up her soror- ity membership due to unexpected financial hardship. You can make a tax-deductible donation to the KU Endowment Association to one of these funds that will help our current members who are in financial need and/or have made outstanding academic, leadership, and service contributions to the sorority and the community. Your gift to the Vera Virginia Hill Thayer Endowment will allow us to assist more of our members. Please send your donation to: KU Endowment Attn: Sophie Lamb P.O. Box 928 Lawrence, KS 66044 In the memo, please write: Vera Thayer Scholarship #35507 Please contact Sophie Blackwell Lamb '08 at slamb@kuendowment.org or (785) 832-7476 if you have questions or are interested in endowing a named scholarship through KU. Juniors getting ready for the first round of fall formal recruitment. Bid Day festivities! Sigma Implements Improved Academic, New Member Education Programs A s we begin the 2018-19 school year, we are excited to welcome 61 new members to Sigma Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta! Our members are looking forward to sisterhood events, family weekend, our fall philanthropy golf tournament, and can't wait to see what the new year will bring. FOCUSING ON ACADEMICS This semester, we have made academics our top priority with International Gamma Phi Beta's new academics program. Last semester, we raised our overall GPA to a 3.4 and are looking to improve! Our new academics program places emphasis on celebrating successes and awarding points to members who go the extra mile to achieve our academic goal of having all members above a 3.0. FORMAL RECRUITMENT After two weeks of hard work, Nina Ricci '16, our membership vice president, is thrilled to announce a successful recruitment and introduce 61 new members (including 17 legacies) to our chapter! These new members will be participating in International Gamma Phi Beta's brand-new New Member Education program led by Blake Gustafson '16, new member educator. This program is focused on getting all members, upperclassmen included, involved in integrating these women into Sigma and what it means to be a Gamma Phi Beta! LOOKING FORWARD After raising more than $3,000 for Girls on the Run last year, we look forward to another successful semester of philanthropy. We also hosted the 24th annual Eileen Teahan Golf Tournament on Sunday, September 30, at Sunflower Hills Golf Course. Looking forward, I am happy to be spending my last semester as an undergraduate as president of this great chapter! We can't wait to get to know our new member class and continue to see Gamma Phi grow and succeed in the future. THANK YOU! Thank you to all our alumnae for your continued support! We were thrilled to receive so many wonderful recommendation letters and appreciate you all taking the time to help us through the recruitment process!
