The Spartans nabbed their second tournament win in West Valley over the weekend by beating the Shasta Lady Wolves 57-49 on Saturday. For the third time this season the Spartans found themselves playing for a tournament title, and it's the second time they took home first place honors. Red Bluff beat Anderson for their first tourney win in Anderson, then fell to Enterprise in the championship game of the Red Bluff Holiday Classic last month. Over the weekend, the Lady Spartans (9-4) rallied past Central Valley, Anderson and Shasta. Spartan boys basketball The Red Bluff Spartans boys basketball team came away from the 20th annual Dennis Burnum Classic basketball tournament in Oroville with a thirdplace finish over the weekend. The Spartans downed Paradise on Thursday, fell to Casa Roble on Friday and downed Lassen 56-44 on Saturday to improve their record to 6-8 on the year. The Spartan boys next travel to Corning (15-0) at 7:30 p.m. today. An injury that sidelines RG3 well into next season is a very real possibility — or at least it seemed that way Monday after coach Mike Shanahan described the results of tests on the rookie's right knee. Shanahan said the results are prompting the team to send Griffin to Florida today to see renowned orthopedist James Andrews for more examinations, essentially a second opinion that will decide the team's fate for the 2013 season. ''There is a concern,'' Shanahan said. ''That's why he's going to see him.'' Griffin tore his ACL while playing for Baylor in 2009, and Shanahan said that old injury caused Griffin's latest MRI to prove inconclusive and produce ''differences of opinion'' in those who have looked at it. ''They want to take another look and have a physical exam with him,'' Shanahan said, ''to make sure they're not looking at old injuries.'' A torn ACL typically requires a rehabilitation period of nine to 12 months, although some players don't return to full health until their second season after the injury. Alabama bashes Notre Dame 42-14 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Tide sure did roll. Alabama proved unstoppable from the outset of the BCS championship game Monday night. The Crimson Tide mounted touchdown drives of 82, 61 and 80 yards on their first three possessions and went on to beat Notre Dame 42-14. The lightning-quick start gave the Tide a 21-0 lead one play into the second quarter, and they built it by blowing the Fighting Irish off the ball. Alabama dominated with an offensive line that includes three All-Americans — first-teamers Barrett Jones at center and Chance Warmack at left guard, and second-teamer D.J. Fluker at right tackle. They created gaping holes against a team ranked fourth in nation in run defense, and neutralized Heisman Trophy finalist Manti Te'o, who became no factor. Notre Dame entered the game with 34 sacks, but A.J. McCarron was given plenty of time to throw. He hit eight of his first nine passes, including a 3-yard toss to Michael Williams for the second touchdown. The early clock-eating drives took Notre Dame's offense out of the game. The Irish gained only 23 yards before Alabama had 21 points. Time of possession at that juncture was 12:12 for the Crimson Tide to 2:52 for the Fighting Irish. The matchup of Alabama's ground attack — with 1,000-yard rushers Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon — against Notre Dame's stout defense was expected to be pivotal. It was, and like the game, it quickly became no contest. Alabama had 74 yards rushing before Notre Dame attempted a running MCT photo Alabama running back Eddie Lacy (42) makes a big play through Notre Dame's defense Monday. play. The Notre Dame defense wasn't accustomed to being pushed around in such a manner. The first scoring drive — which took only five plays — was the longest the Irish had allowed all season. McCarron threw downfield on the second play to Kevin Norwood for 29 yards. Three plays later, Lacy found lots of room up the middle and ran through the grasp of a cornerback en route to a 20-yard touchdown. Most of the time in the early going, the Tide ran to the left and away from Te'o. And Alabama's linemen repeatedly locked the linebacker up. The Corning Cardinals boys basketball team went into its 12th annual Corning Shootout basketball tournament with an undefeated record over the weekend and came out the same way, downing three teams on its way to a championship. The Cards, after suffering a loss to Orland in the championship game of last year's Shootout, avenged the loss with a 40-36 win over the Trojans Saturday evening. Corning improved to an impressive 15-0 on the season after handing Orland its fourth loss on the year. The Cardinals have been enjoying consistent, prolific play from their junior forward Michael Shoemaker, who shifted momentum in Corning's opening matchup against Central Valley with a spectacular block to deny the Falcons a go-ahead layup late in the second period. The Cards beat Central Valley 46-32 and downed Anderson 43-35 in the semifinal round Friday before taking on the Trojans. Corning resumes play at 7:30 p.m. today at home against Red Bluff (6-8). ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.c om.
