Excellent response -- the very one I was hoping for to set the tone for this column. It's important to note that times have changed with these monthly sale guides. In recent years, some of the best sales often take place immediately before the related holiday or season. Here's a month-by-month guide for the best times to purchase all sorts of consumer goods: January -- Besides everything Christmas, this is a good time to stock up on white sale items like towels and blankets. TVs are priced lowest during the two weeks prior to the Super Bowl. February -- President's Day is the cue for furniture retailers to offer blowout bargains, especially on upholstered furniture. March -- Even though it still feels like winter, home improvement centers haul out air conditioners in March and put them on sale. March is also National Frozen Food month, so plan to fill your freezer. April -- Home improvement items like flooring, house paint and gardening supplies are good buys now. And eggs, both chocolate and fowl. Think: Easter. May -- Mattresses and box springs are highly promoted from bargain this month, along with late May to early fall. Hunt Everyday Cheapskate Winter conditions halt fuelwood cutting Along with the arrival of winter weather comes the need to suspend fuelwood cutting on the Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest. The affected area corresponds to Zone V on the Fuelwood Cutting Map, which accompanies fuelwood permits at the time of purchase. Eagle Lake District Ranger Ann Carl- son has issued the temporary closure, which goes into effect January 15. The provision for this measure is contained in Section D.1 of the Fuelwood Cutting Requirements. The closure helps to prevent resource damage and ruts from being created in roads and meadows where woodcutters drive to get to firewood. Although the Eagle Lake Ranger District will be closed to firewood cutting until warmer, drier weather, both the Almanor and Hat Creek Ranger Districts of the Lassen National Forest will remain open to woodcutting. Depending on conditions, Zone V is expected to re-open sometime in late May or early June. The policy of closing areas to woodcutting was implemented during the 1995 season. It continues to be successful in helping to protect Forest roads and resources, as well as the property of adjacent landowners. Call the Eagle Lake Ranger District at 530-257-4188 with questions about this temporary closure. 2013 Heritage Faire scheduled Feb. 23 to all the classes offered and a potaThe 2013 Heritage Faire will be from Enterprise High School.
