2 THE DRAGON'S WAGON Tim Kotas '88 (Continued from page 1) "The biggest highlight of my career, so far, came two years ago when CMS published a three-year randomized control trial of Welvie with scientific proof that what we do saves lives and millions of healthcare dol- lars. While most people would not think of me as a social worker, what I get to do in my work helps thousands of people every day." "More than 20 years ago, I realized that the problems with healthcare in the U.S. stem from not recognizing who the real purchas- er is. It's a multi-trillion-dollar economic engine that the system would lead you to believe is paid for by insurance companies and the federal government when in fact it is you and me. When consumers engage by taking an active role and insisting on being in charge they will generally make the right decision and get better care. I stay centered by not getting distracted with the politics of healthcare and remaining focused on what we can do right now to make it better." Tim uses the foundation he built in Beta to propel forward in both his career and per- sonal life. "To this day loyalty, a value nur- tured in the Loving Cup, is by far my most important attribute I try to give. Amazingly, I get 10 times more than I can possible give. I am blessed to still have many of my Beta brothers and their families in my life today. We can see each other once a year or once every 10 and it is like no time at all has passed. I lived in the house two years. I should have pledged as a freshman. A Beta was my best man and I hope someday my Beta brothers will be there to deliver my eu- logy—around a campfire and a keg." When not working, Tim and his wife sup- port their small rural community of Pullman, Mich. "Much of our free time is spent vol- unteering our talents to our local animal shelter and other community activities. We also have several lakefront homes we rent as vacation rentals and every New Year's, for nearly 10 years, have been spent right here in Pullman with my Beta brothers and families." He was at MSU from 1951 to 1954 and graduated with a BSLA degree, which led to his distinguished career as a landscape architect. He enjoyed many great memories and stayed in touch with many of his MSU and Beta alums. His son, Brian, and wife, Tam- my, have shared some pic- tures. These may stir some fond memories! Jack was very kind and included a generous gift in his will to support MSU Betas. He will be missed by all who knew him.
