128 Years of Pi Phi Tradition T he Minnesota Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi and the University of Minnesota share a storied tradition dating back to 1890. As one of the first sororities on campus, we have always been a premier sorority at UMN. Our tradition of recruiting the finest young women at UMN shows through our mission to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service. With more than 2,600 initiates, Minnesota Alpha has influenced the lives of thousands of women, cultivating lifelong friendships in the process. Our motto, "Friends and Leaders for Life," is evidenced in every walk of life as Pi Phi has contributed CEOs, educators, mothers, attorneys, physicians, health care workers, government officials, innovative entrepreneurs and more. ese women have been leaders in their communities as members of boards, organizations and community efforts. ey have volunteered their time for numerous endeavors grounded in the principles of Pi Beta Phi, including Read > Lead > AchieveĀ® and other organizations promoting literacty and education for women. Our founders believed in the potential of young women and sought to create a space for women to have an impact on the world. In 1867, our founders deliberately started Pi Beta Phi as an organization focused on academics and leadership, and we are confident they would be proud of our chapter today as we continue to recruit women with these same inherent values. We can all be proud of the commitment of Minnesota Alpha to the founding principles of Pi Beta Phi, and we can look forward to even greater accomplishments in the future. All of us have learned life lessons from our Minnesota Alpha experiences. ese experiences prepared us for the future and helped make us who we are. e Minnesota Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi has flourished for over 128 years by focusing on the core values of sisterhood, well-being, human dignity and heritage. e challenge we face now is to maintain that focus.
