ANSON '04 I n remembrance of Matthew D. Anson '04, the Illinois Alpha Alumni Corporation voted last year to rename the Star and Scroll honorary the Matthew D. Anson Star and Scroll honorary. Matt was the embodiment of the balanced man ideal. He is remembered as a gied athlete and a hum- ble leader, serving as an influential vice president of recruitment during a critical time in the chapter's history following its return to 1105 S. Fourth Street. He graduated with a degree in aerospace engi- neering as a Bronze Tablet scholar and would go on to earn a master's degree in aerospace engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. "Matt was the best of us. Beyond being the best athlete or the smartest, he was the best man I knew. He looked for the best in each person and cared deeply about filling our house with people who chal- lenged him and who he knew could be special," Eric Workman '04 said. Illinois Alpha started the Star and Scroll honorary in 1938 to honor outstanding freshmen in the fra- ternity system and over the years the scholarship evolved. When the chapter was recolonized in 1998 the annual scholarship was reestablished to recognize an undergraduate brother that balanc- es academic and athletic success. e scholarship programs affiliated with the chapter are administered by the Illinois Alpha Founda- tion, created in 2015 as a vehicle to engage, celebrate, and support our important mission. Today and always, Illinois Alpha remembers brother Matthew's significant legacy. Donations to the Matthew D. Anson Star and Scroll Scholarship Fund can be made through the Illinois Alpha Foundation. You can mail your contribution checks to P.O. Box 42, Elmhurst, IL. 60126 or donate online at www.illinoissigeps.com/make-a-donation.
