Undergraduates Gain Insight at Carlson Leadership Academy O n Friday, February 24, several members of Illinois Alpha made the journey to Chicago to attend the annual Carlson Leadership Academy (CLA). e conference was a regional meeting with representatives from all Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters coming together in an attempt to maintain organization, recognize the accomplishments of our fellow brothers, and learn newer and advanced innovative strategies from other chapters and alumni to improve our individual chapter. On Saturday, we heard inspiring speeches by Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni, including Illinois Alpha's own Keith Bruce '87. We met in groups to develop strategies to further enhance our influence within our chapters and try to make our chapters the model for Greek life around us. One of the greatest things about CLA was the professional aura we felt. Entering meetings in business professional dress and staying at a locale as prestigious as the Hilton gave the entire conference a real-world and professional feel to it. Overall, CLA gave our attending members tremendous experience and quality bonding time and a change of pace outside of Champaign. Going to CLA provid- ed our younger members the opportunity to actively participate and made them feel involved. ey were able to take on leader- ship roles at a young age that will help prepare them for taking on any crossroads that our fraternity may come across in the years to come. Overall, CLA was an excellent event and a conference that everyone should hope to have the opportunity of attending. Finally, Illinois Alpha volunteers Ryan Hamrick '16 and Dave Mangian '06 were honored at CLA. Dave received the Volunteer of the Year Award and Ryan received the New Volunteer of the Year Award. In 1994, the Gottheil family created the Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research. Josh's fund uses funds collected to help on- cology nurses get the training they need to help patients. e hockey game has been played for the last three years to raise money for the fund. is year we wanted to make it extra special and not just any hockey game. Matt Mor- row '21 and Matt Jones '21 reached out to famous Blackhawks national anthem singer Jim Cornelison on Facebook. Aer a few text messages and talking to him about the event, he was more than willing to sing the anthem at our game. anks to the support of Hendrick House and the iHotel, we were able to raise the necessary money. We were tremendously excited to have Jim at the game to help increase interest in the event this year. He is a household name in the Chicagoland area that many people in Champaign know. On top of having Jim Cornelison honor us with the singing of the anthem, we had other fraternities interested in joining us in our cause. We all have a common goal of seeing Josh's fund continue to thrive, which has helped unite fraternities on campus. e game fea- tured SigEp and Phi Delta eta vs. Delta Tau Delta and Acacia. With SigEp teamed up with the three fraternities, our philan- thropic event was a hit on social media and was abuzz on campus. We have made visits to various fraternities and sororities to in- vite them to the Gottheil Cup. e Cham- paign community helped our cause greatly with T-shirt purchases, ticket sales, and do- nations. We are happy to report the chapter raised over $2,500 dollars for Josh's fund. We plan to continue the Gottheil Cup to gener- ate donations to Josh's fund in the future.
