Strawberry Shortcake Luigi’s (Mike Lounsberry) 1¼ ounces vanilla vodka 1¼ ounces strawberry vodka 2 ounces fresh pureed strawberries Rim martini glass with lime juice, then sugar. Mix all ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into martini glass. The sweetness of the pureed strawberries and tanginess of the lime and sugar on the rim complemented each other perfectly and tasted like more! Cucumber Martini Morgan’s (Carl Hillyard) 1½ ounces vodka ½ ounces simple syrup 1½ ounces cucumber puree ¼ ounces sweetened lime juice Chili powder and salt* *Morgan’s uses Trecha’s Tajin or chili powder mixed with salt to rim the glass. Blend six ¼-inch cucumber slices well, then mix all contents in shaker with ice. Shake and strain into martini glass. Garnish with the cucumber slice. This drink was unique and refreshing – the pureed cucumber gives the drink a pleasing taste and texture. With the slight sweetness, paired with the chili powder rim, this martini would appeal equally to men and women. Bonsai Martini Dock’s (Mark Hackler) 1 ounce pure cane syrup 1½ ounces vodka 2-3 sprigs of fresh cilantro 2 lime wedges peeled 2 lemon wedges peeled Muddle cilantro, peeled lemon and lime wedges and cane syrup in a mixing glass. Add ice. Add vodka and shake for 15 seconds. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a lemon wedge. This cocktail really took me by surprise as I do not normally care for cilantro. A little cilantro goes a long way, so I was admittedly leery at first sip but was immediately won over by the subtle and wonderfully unique flavor. This is definitely a unisex drink New York Cheesecake ScrubOaks (Shannon Cato) 1½ ounces vanilla vodka 3 ounces cranberry juice Rim glass with grand marnier then lime sugar. In highball glass, add crushed ice, vodka and cranberry juice. Stir. Or shake with ice and strain into martini glass. Garnish with strawberry or cherry. This drink has a delicate flavor and color. The Grand Marnier and sugar on the rim was delicious. I liked how light it was yet it leaves a rich and creamy taste in your mouth. 44 | Food & Wine • 2010
