Members of each fraternity prep for the upcoming faceoff. the lion Tattler illinois beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon • The University of illinois SPRING 2018 T he spring 2018 semester in Champaign has been quite the time for philanthropic events. To start off the semester, we partook in our third annual hockey game against Zeta Beta Tau. Although it was great fun to watch former athletes relive their glory days, the best part was our philanthropic efforts. With the combined efforts of ΣAE and ZBT, we raised $5,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. We chose this foundation for a variety of reasons, but the main reason comes from its relatability to several members' lives. We chose something that we truly care about and want to be a part of changing; together, we can beat cancer. We claimed the bragging rights from the competition for the third year in a row. Moreover, the game concluded with a score of 3-1, good guys. The game with ZBT has been a great success each year, so, we thought, why should we stop at just one annual game? This idea led to the Spring Classic, another hockey game benefitting the American Cancer Society. Similarly, we chose to contribute our funds to something our members can take pride in. Teaming up with Pi Kappa Alpha, we were fortunate enough to take down Sigma Chi and Alpha Tau Omega in the hockey game—but this was not the real competition. ΣX and ΑΤΩ raised $100 more than our combination with ΠKA. With all fraternities combined, we contributed more than $7,000 to the society—a feat each fraternity can be proud of. The greatest thing about Greek life at the University of Illinois is the philanthropy each sorority and fraternity conducts. We had members of ΣAE compete in several philanthropic events con- ducted by sororities, including: Delta Gamma Anchorbowl (football), Gamma Phi Beta Moonball (kickball), Kappa Alpha Theta Hoops (basketball), and Delta Delta Delta Greeks at Bat (softball). Attending other houses' events creates an incentive for them to participate in ours. We hosted the annual Paddy Murphy, in which teams of sororities partook in a hot dog eating contest, water balloon fight, and tug of war. These activities were quite entertaining to watch. Our efforts raised $2,500 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Our philanthropy chairman, Ben Michel '20, participated in the walk to end MS as well.
