Past Board President Jack Weller was Master of Ceremonies for the evening which honored many of last year's volunteers, supporters and participants in the Club's programs. Present- ers and assistants for the evening were Board Members Jack Weller and Tim Quattlebaum, Boys & Girls Club Program Di- rector Mary Pass, Teen Outreach Coordinator Keeynan Pharr, and Club staff members Robin Ledford and Dobson Collins, Club volunteer Bambi Myers, Youth Participant Da'Leion Hopper and the Club Executive Director Joshua Propst. Sumter St. • Shelby • NC 704-471-2582 www.bgcclevelandcounty.org Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County Annual Awards Banquet Mary Pass, Boys & Girls Club Program Director presents Keari Afford the Junior Youth of the Year. JUNIOR YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD The Junior Youth of the Year Award was presented to Keari Afford. She a member of the Boys & Girls Club and a sixth grader at Shelby Intermediate School. She is an active member of Torch Club where is a regular leader and volunteer demonstrates a positive attitude among her peers. In addition to her award, she was presented with a $50 gift card compliments of the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. The Youth of the Year program was sponsored locally by a generous grant from the Albemarle Foundation and supported by Albemarle Corporation in Kings Mountain, NC. The following members of the Youth of the Year Judging Panel were also recognized for their volunteer service: Katie Barbee, Bishop Carolyn Briggs, Sandy Hamrick, Titus Hopper, Dedrick Kimble, Molly McKinney Stone MEMORIAL / SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS The following three presentations were announced by Past Board President Jack Weller and Executive Direc- tor Joshua Propst. Keeynan Pharr, Teen Outreach Coordinator congratulates Da'Leion Hopper as the 2018 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD The Youth of the Year Award was presented to Da'Leion Hopper. He is a ten-year member of the Boys & Girls Club and a Junior at Shelby High School. He has volunteered in the Jack & Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Teen Leadership Program, and in numerous other capacities with his church and school. He is currently employed as a Junior Staff Member at the Club. He is a member of the National Honor Society with a 3.7 GPA and has earned a spot on the Shelby High School Varsity Basketball Team as a Scholar Athlete. Earlier this month he competed in the NC State Youth of the Year competition against nine- teen other candidates from across state. He placed as one of four fi nalists in that competition. In addition to his award, he was presented with a $100 gift card compli- ments of the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. HONOR DAY CAMPER AWARD The youth recipient of the Tony Izzi, Jr. Honor Day Camper Award" was Guy Morris. He is a leader among his peers and almost always displays a positive attitude. He exemplifi es the character and integrity we like to see from all our Club members. He is a fourth-grade stu- dent at James Love Elementary School where he was recently selected to compete in the Elementary Battle of the Books Competition. He has been an active partic- ipant in the both the After-School Program and the Jack and Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. He received a plaque honoring his achievement and a $50 gift card from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. Tony Izzi has been a Board Member since 1959 and was instrumental in the initial capital campaign to raise funds for the Main Club in the 1970s. He cur- rently serves as a member of the Advisory Board and continues to sell car raffl e tickets each year. Joshua Propst, Executive Director Boys & Girls Clubs rec- ognizes Essence Erwin as the fi rst winner of the Rakeem Sweezy Memorial Boys & Girls Club Alumni Scholarship. RAKEEM SWEEZY MEMORIAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP The fi rst annual Rakeem Sweezy Memorial Boys & Girls Club Alumni Scholarship, in the amount of $500 was awarded to Essence Ervin. Essence is an eight-year member of the Boys & Girls Club, a Senior at Shelby High School and has been accepted to Winston Salem State University for the Fall 2018 semester. She is a two- time winner of the Club's local Youth of the Year competi- tion. She has volunteered in the Jack & Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Teen Leadership Program, and in numerous other capacities with her church and school. She currently volunteers as a peer helper and homework tutor at the Club. Rakeem Sweezy was a longtime member of the Boys & Girls Clubs attending from age 6 through age eighteen. After graduating from Shelby High, he attended Brevard College where he was a constant reminder to everyone around him of what he learned at the Boys & Girls Club: "Your circumstance does not defi ne your outcome". He inspired countless individuals to Live, Laugh and Love through his positive attitude, determination, strong moral values, and magnetic personality. His tragic and untimely death in December 2017 was a tremendous loss. But to those who were blessed to have known him; in true Rakeem spirit, his death only serves to strengthen our resolve to go forth and "Love Like Sweezy". Chuck and Faye Spangler congratulate Damajae Rhodes on winning the Carl Spangler Memorial Teen Camper Lead- ership Award, named in Mr. Spangler's Memory. CARL SPANGLER MEMORIAL TEEN CAMPER LEADERSHIP AWARD The Carl Spangler Memorial Teen Camper Leadership Award was presented to Damajae Rhodes. He has been a Club member for six years. He is enrolled in advanced classes and is a straight A student at Shelby Middle School. He is a former winner of the Honor Day Camper Award and Sportsmanship awards. He volunteers in the gardening program and farm camp programs at the Club. His award included both a plaque to honor his achieve- ment and a $50 gift certifi cate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. A plaque was presented to Mr. Spangler's son, Chuck and wife Doris as a memento of the evening. Carl Spangler was president of the Board 1985-86 and was recognized with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the State of North Carolina for his work with the Boys & Girls Club.
