Freeman Jr. Education Fund has assisted students in Cleveland County, N.C., in their pursuit of higher education. The 2018 winners were named on May 30 in a ceremony held in Tucker Stu- dent Center at Gardner-Webb University. A total of $20,000 in scholarships was provided to nine students, and three of them are planning to attend Gardner-Webb this fall. The Freeman Fund was named in honor of longtime area business leader, Joseph B. Freeman Jr. At the time of his death in 1991, Freeman managed the Shelby, N.C., offi ce of Interstate/Johnson Lane, an investment and fi - nancial advisory service. He was an advocate for higher education and desired to pro- vide talented high school stu- dents with additional resourc- es and opportunities to attend college. The education fund was established to reward Cleveland County students for their perseverance and dedication in and out of the classroom, while recognizing Freeman's legacy of support. Freeman Fund recipients are awarded based on aca- demic profi ciency, extracur- ricular activities, internal moti- vation, potential success, and fi nancial need. The Freeman Fund Committee consists of area business leaders and Gardner-Webb University representatives who evaluate worthy candidates. Photo by Dr. Bob Carey Artist and Studio continue a tradition Phillip Philbeck and the Victorian Rose Studio owner Tracy Stillwell have donated a print to the Boys & Girls Club for the eleventh year in a row. The tradition started in 2008, when Elwyn Stillwell and Phil- lip Philbeck donated their fi rst piece of artwork to the Boys & Girls Club to be sold dur- ing the live auction held as part of the Annual Car Raffl e and Auction. Elwyn hoped that the artwork would raise about $600 which is the cost to sponsor one child in the After School Program at the Club. The print being donated this year to the Boys & Girls Club is one of Phillip's more popular prints. It is called "Blackberry Road" and the cabin is located near Blowing Rock. "Black- berry Road" depicts bright country fl owers that contrast with the weather worn boards of the old home. The Victorian Rose Photography Studio pro- vided the matting and framing. This beautiful framed artwork has a value of $700. Tracy Stillwell, Elwyn's daughter and owner of Vic- torian Rose Studio shared that she and Phillip continue Tracy Stillwell of Victorian Rose Studio and Jack Weller, Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland County. the tradition of donating the framed piece of artwork to remember the generosity and giving nature of her Dad. "Blackberry Road" will be auctioned on Friday, June 15, 2018 during the 53rd Car Raf- fl e and Auction held at Go- forth Hall, Cleveland County Fairgrounds. To purchase a ticket for the car raffl e, contact a Board member of the Boys & Girls Club, call the Club at 704 471 2582 or stop by and see Josh Propst at 412 West Sumter Street.
