You could see antique grand master jewels, a unique Revolutionary War flag replica (the Bullock flag), early pictures of the Masonic Homes, fragments of our 1907 building���s cornerstone and its deposit box, projection systems from the last 150 years of Masonic lectures, various Masonic paintings (including Vasare���s Building of King Solomon���s Temple from the mid-1500s), and dozens of artifacts from historic lodges. Grand Historian Michael Brantley served as host for the day. From the 1787 founding of our Grand Lodge were displayed the original hand-written minutes of the occasion and the Bible used on the altar there. The one-of-a-kind master���s chair from Royal White Hart 2 in Halifax was seen by the public for the first time since its restoration. Also on display was Royal White Hart���s minutes of appointing a committee to welcome the Marquis de Lafayette on his visit to their town in 1824. Docent volunteers were stationed around the building to explain the exhibits to visitors. Another big part of the occasion was the official unveiling of the recent restoration of our headquarters. Built in 1955, the building originally featured an open feeling with lots of glass. In the late 1960s, a settling foundation of the deck at the rear of the building started to stress the structure. Rather than repair, they elected to simply remove the deck and all the glass on that side. What was a brilliantly lit great room with a mosaic terrazzo floor became a dank cave with a floor of blue shag carpet. Over the last 18 months, the glass and deck have been replaced returning our landmark building to its former glory. Accommodations for time capsules are built into the deck. Grand Master Robert Gresham���s keynote address preceded the rededication of the building performed by the Grand Lodge officers. Past Grand Master Lewis Ledford, who presided over the restoration, gave a history of the project. Another treat of the day was University of North Carolina faculty member Christopher Armitage���s portrayal of William R. Davie, our third grand master and the ���Father of the University.��� The first public procession of our Grand Lodge was to set the cornerstone of Old East at UNC. It was the first building on the first state university campus in our country. It is one of the events illustrated on the Cox murals. The McFarland Road Band played bluegrass tunes throughout the day. Grill-Zilla, parked on the grounds, served barbecued chicken and pork under the mammoth tent erected in the parking lot. For those of you unable to attend the celebration, the newly restored headquarters will continue to be open for tours. Many of the artifacts will remain on view until early January in their current positions by the famous historical murals of Allyn Cox. Over time, some of those will be again stored for safety while others will take a place in the newly refined museum/library area at the Grand Lodge headquarters.
