4A – Daily News – Saturday, May 1, 2010 Agriculture & farm It has been a month since I received an email on Sun- day afternoon, March 28, from an Arizona CowBelle friend Marie Pyeatt, about the husband of our friend being murdered. Marie had included the article “Border Rancher Rob Krentz and Dog Found Shot to Death after Aiding Illegal Alien.” It had been posted by Sonoran Alliance on the Internet, and was a reprint from the Diggers Realm.com. My friend Sue Krentz and I were state presidents of our respective organiza- tions about the same time, 1995-96. We were both interested in ranching, fed- eral lands and the problems encountered by long time ranching families. Their ranch was established in 1907, and was on the Mexi- can border. It is a 35,000- acre ranch and family oper- ated. In 2008 the ranch was inducted in the Arizona Farming and Ranching Hall of Fame. The Krentz Ranch is noted for its extensive gravity flow water line. Water from the line sustains the cattle operation and provides the water needed to maintain a well managed range. The line is aug- mented by sub- mergible pumps to provide a consis- tent flow. ranch Rancher murdered near border Growers gather for annual prune meeting YUBA CITY – The annual membership meeting of the Prune Bargaining Association will take place on May 5 in Yuba City. Prune grower-members will gather for a business meet- ing and to recognize new board members, Mohan Bains, Steve Gruenwald, Paul Hundal and Gary Jhutty. Directors retiring from the board include Mike Takher, Money Dhami, Gurnam Pamma, Sukhraj Pamma and Mark Shep- ard. The association will acknowledge outgoing president Keith Larrabee for his tireless dedication and leadership.Larrabee will remain on the board but is stepping down as president after having served eight years in the position. He has overseen some of the most challenging times we have witnessed in the industry. Larrabee has been an engaged, effective leader and has Courtesy photo Sue and Rob Krentz when the Krentz Ranch and family were inducted in the Arizona Farming and Ranching Hall of Fame in 2008. Jean The line not only provides water for the cat- tle, it has allowed the family to create 25,000 acres of wildlife habitat for numerous species such as deer, javelina, mountain lion, antelope, dove and quail. Rob was checking the water lines on his property on an ATV when he came across a person who appeared to need help. Krentz was phoning or Barton radioing his brother when he was shot twice with a Glock 9mm, and his dog was wounded also. Sue wants the people to know that “Rob was liked by Mexicans and Americans, that this isn’t right. All I wanted was change, to stop the vio- lence and anger, and the illegals thinking that we were the enemy. That they had the right to do what ever they wanted.” Sue had attended the American National Cattle- Women legislative meeting in Phoenix a couple years ago wanting help on her fencing. She was concerned that the fencing that separat- ed her ranch and Old Mexi- co was not keeping illegals out due to animal activists government regulations that required some fencing to be low enough for jaguars to jump over and holes in the fencing large enough for land tortoises to move through. She brought an 8 x 10 photo of illegals packing machine guns across her land. She was wanting help, but we didn’t know how to help her. I immediately emailed my ANCW and California CattleWomen contacts with the article Marie had sent me because our friend’s husband had been murdered and the women needed to know. Sometimes I have won- dered about the topics, but as they say — it is not always believable until it affects you personally. Please investigate the story at the link below that occured in Arizona, right on the Mexican border Satur- day. A very sad situation for my friends from American National CattleWomen and National Cattleman's Beef Association. Sue Krentz is truly a wonderful lady. Los- ing her husband Rob in this manner is a tragedy. Please keep her family in your prayers. People need to know this is happening to hard working folks who are on their own land and mind- ing their own business. If you google Rob Krentz you will find more articles on this tragedy.” Rollye James covered it on her national radio show 7-10 p.m. Monday, March 29. Sunday night my New York friend also sent this message to every Fox national reporter she could find an email address for. On Tuesday, March 30, Fox news was broadcasting from the Krentz ranch. For a while when you Googled Rob Krentz more than 825,000 related articles were posted. Drudge Report, Lucianne.com, car- ried the story as well as our livestock publications. On Friday, April 23, Ari- Jean Barton can be reached at jbarton@theskybeam.com. zona’s Governor Jan Brew- er took a courageous and necessary step toward bor- der security and to protect Arizonans. She is now being vilified by the media. Arizona’s SB 1070 is not an immigration bill — it is a border security measure. Immigration is a separate issue. We have immigration laws but until the border is secure they cannot be enforced. Anyone who wants to operate a vehicle is required to have a license in their possession any time they are doing that driving. In most states you are also required to provide proof of insurance. What is the big deal about carrying proof of legally being in this coun- try? now handed the gavel to Ranvir Singh who has been on the PBA board since 2002. Also receiving recognition will be the other officers of the association. Responsibilities for the vice-president posi- tion have gone from eight-year veteran Jon Lavy to Brien Smith, and Paul Hundal will replace Khan Khan who has held the secretary and treasurer position for eight years. The guest speaker will be a communications expert who will present a video and speak about the sad plight of the pear growers and what happened to their bargaining associ- ation. This education is sponsored by a partnership with the USDA-RMA to demonstrate how crucial grower unity is to improving overall returns and managing risk. For more information, call 674-5636.
