For more information contact Town Hall at 928-927-4333. by Joanne Winer The Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce was formed 15 years ago in March when 40 business owners met to discuss what problems they were having and what a new chamber could do for their business. Most of them were mom and pop operations who were struggling and felt they could not compete with all the vendors who come to town every year if they could not get better representation when they could not afford the high membership rates of some chambers. There were other reasons too, but when someone said, "If you don't like the way they do things, do it yourselves," so we did. Over 40 businesses joined that fi rst night, and before we knew it, we represented 200 businesses in town and out of town. Our main focus and our fi rst priority was the promotion of our local businesses, and that has been our goal for all these years. Those of you who have been here for this time know some of the problems we faced being the new kid on the block, but in spite of all the hardships we have had over the years, we have per- severed and thrived, and we hope that is true of our business community as well. If so, then we have done out jobs well. We have been very proud to serve our businesses and our winter visitors. We have always hoped that someone else would take over our mis- sion, but we realized a long time ago that our business owners just didn't have the time to volunteer, so we kept it going anyway, until now there is another chamber who can fi ll the gap and we can retire fi nally. The four of us who started this business chamber are fi nding ourselves with health problems, and we fi gured it was just time to let someone else take over the reins and the Quartzsite Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is now up and running and will be there for the tourists and winter visitors this next season. They are a group of younger, more computer savvy volun- teers who can do things like networking etc. that none of us is computer savvy enough to do. "Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present." ~ Bil Keane
