10 www.DesertMessenger.com April 4, 2018 Salome High updates Donations from Metal Detecting Club Transfer station hours Quartzsite Transfer Station is now on their SUMMER hours. They are open Sunday thru Tuesday 6am to 1pm. (When temperatures reach over 110 degrees, they will close early.) For more info call the Main landfill 928-916-1253 or Main office at 928-854-9152. The transfer station is located north of Town, just off Hwy. 95, near the Sewer Treatment Plant. This year's track and field team is leaping into the new season. The Sa- lome athletes did very well at their first meet, held in Wickenburg. Kyle Grasser was the MVP of the day. He won first place in both the long jump and the high jump events. Overall, the boys placed third and the girls placed fourth. According to Coach Slu- cas, everything is going just fine. They're train- ing hard and working to compete with other teams in the future. Softball and Baseball are in full swing. Soft- ball is entering the sea- son with a new coach and a delay in their practices, so the girls have a lot to get used to. It's been a rough start; the girls lost their four games. However, they won back to back games in a doubleheader against Ash Fork, hopefully signaling a turn in the tides for the SHS soft- ball team. Baseball has had an equally rough start to their season. They are cur- rently in a six-game losing streak. Even though the boys haven't won any games yet, they are making great strides as a team. Senior Os- car Cruz said that everyone is im- proving in their batting and in their overall enjoyment of the game. Salome High School has always had a robust building trades program and this year is no exception. Mr. Drotzmann and the students have been hard at work on the current iteration of the house they build every few years. This one is slated to be completed in the next year or two. For those not familiar with the program, the advanced building trade students go out to a con- struction site for two hours a day and work on building a house from start to finish. Once they build the house, they put it up for sale. This year they've finished some big things like doing all the plumbing, electric, and the heating/ac. In other news about Salome's wood- shop teacher, Mr. Drotzmann was selected as the SHS applicant for teacher of the year this time around. Teacher of the year is an award granted to teachers who are deemed exceptional at their job either by be- ing observed or by being nominated for it. The award is a high honor and great thing to achieve for any teacher. It shows how hard they work and how appreciated they are by their peers. Mr. Drotzmann was nominated for the award by other staff members. FREE CLASSIFIEDS Desert Messenger offers FREE Classified Ads! HERE'S THE SMALL PRINT: Items for sale under $1000.
