In 1993, the North Carolina General Assembly created Smart Start, appropriating $20 million to 18 pioneer counties to begin the work of improving the quality of child care, strengthening families, and supporting healthy child development. By 1997, the funding had increased to $97 million and all 100 North Carolina counties were being served by Smart Start. In 1993, Cleveland County was selected as 1 of the 18 pioneer Smart Start initia- tives. Over the past 25 years, Smart Start has become a nationally recognized leader in early childhood and healthy development. The Cleveland County Partnership for Chil- dren provides expertise, guid- ance and infrastructure to ensure children in Cleveland County receive the care and nurturing they need to thrive. The organization invests in early education, literacy, health, and family support so that Cleveland County's chil- dren are ready to succeed and lead productive lives. "Our purpose remains no less important than when we began 25 years ago: chil- dren are our future, and the investments we make now will secure a better tomorrow for them", stated Cleveland County Partnership for Chil- dren's Executive Director, Cathy Taylor. Since its inception, not only has the Cleveland Coun- ty Partnership for Children served children through Smart Start but under Taylor's leadership, CCPFC estab- lished the NC Pre-Kindergar- ten Program administrative unit (Formerly More at Four) and in 2015 became the Grantee for Cleveland Coun- ty's Early Head Start pro- grams as well. In 2005, Duke Energy awarded the Partnership a $30,000 grant to implement Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Cleveland County. Today over, 103,818 books have been distributed thru Smart Start funding and the generous donations from the community. Currently, 75 local partner- ships serve all 100 counties and because of the work of Smart Start, more children are in high quality child care, third grade reading and math scores have increased, spe- cial education placements have decreased, the number of developmental screenings has increased, and the num- ber of children being read to daily has increased. On Friday, June 8, 2018, the Cleveland County Part- nership for Children will cel- ebrate its 25-year history with a celebration and fund- raiser. The celebration and fundraiser will take place from 6:00pm-9:00pm at the Uptown Indigo, located at 112 North Lafayette Street, Shelby. Entertainment will be provided by 8 Track Vinyl and Christine Neal Cline, Anne Goss and Company. Meal will be catered by Dressing on the Side. Tickets are $75.00 for a couple and $40.00 for an individual. To purchase a ticket, please contact Angela Padgett, Smart Start Coordi- nator at 704.734.2052. Monies raised from the event will go toward the Part- nership's efforts to serve more children.
