the Beta Tau blaster Delta tau Delta Fraternity at the university oF nebraska-lincoln I spring 2018 Inside Thank You, Dedicated Alumni 2 Chapter Update 2 Welcome, New Members 3 Chapter Eternal 3 Moving Forward TogeTher To achieve excellence en rouTe To our FuTure BeTa Tau leadership! T he opportunity we each have today provides that path to a successful record of achievement by the Fraternity and its alumni and ensures a future that is equally as successful in the accomplishments and contributions of our undergraduate members today as they go forward into their lives ahead. I wrote about the article A New Generation of Explorers, and reflected on the notable accomplishments of Beta Tau alumni, who have achieved success professionally and personally. I predicted a bright future for the outstanding young men of Beta Tau with continued achievement. Who among them will we be hearing about in the years ahead? Read on with pride as we trace the success of other men of Beta Tau. Our alumni are leading in their careers in agriculture, business, finance, medicine, law, and architecture. Beta Tau has a rich history of notable leadership and accomplishment on campus and as alumni, and I remain confident that we will continue to do so in the future! We are fortunate again to have the dedicated group of executives and brothers in the undergraduate chapter and witnessed a very successful completion of our summer recruitment and a follow-up in the fall, which brings us to 32 young men. If you are on campus you'll see that our fraternity neighbors are remodeling and reconstructing their houses. When I'm asked about the future of Greeks on campus by University of Nebraska Lincoln alumni or non-Greeks, I use the examples readily at hand: SAE, Sigma Nu and others nearby. Clearly important to the future of those chapters but also a reflection of the strength of the system of fraternities and sororities which have been on the campus at the UNL for well over a century; and I point with pride to Beta Tau's contributions to the return of Delta Tau Delta at the University of Nebraska Kearney. I also point with pride to the Beta Tau Shelter: privately owned, not university property, and our right to "association" is a well-tested constitutionally based principle of freedom. We will continue to lead as we have in the past! PHILANTHROPY The men of Beta Tau continued to lead through example in their philanthropic activities. In addition to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation fundraising walk, they continue their work with the Veteran's Administration in Lincoln and the Friendship Home and the GoFundMe initiative to support the local Friendship Home and the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event (www.gofundme.com/support- for-the-friendship-home). ALUMNI EVENTS The after-work socials have been successful and we are again working with the undergraduates to schedule another event at Big Fred's in Omaha (watch for details). Twenty-six attended last year and took advantage of the opportunity to reconnect with other alumni and to interact with the active brothers in the chapter. We hope to exceed that number, so please plan to attend. SCHOLARSHIPS Beta Tau has long recognized the importance of academics and the value of exceptional academic achievement. We are fortunate to have the commitment of the Emanuel family in establishing the Allen Gene Emanuel '85 Scholarship, and Ben Neff '54, for establishing the Ben Neff Endowed Beta Tau Scholarship, and the efforts underway to fully fund the Beta Tau Leaders Memorial Scholarship in honor of Fred Allen III '52, Keaton Klein '11, and Bob Foehlinger '01. Please consider these and assist us in fully funding the Leaders Memorial Scholarship. ALUMNI INVOLVEMENT Thanks to the House Corporation alumni board! Our alumni involvement provides leadership for the Beta Tau chapter. Perhaps there's time in your busy schedule to up your contribution to Beta Tau and get more involved. You can pitch in and make a difference. There are routine day- to-day activities and meetings, decisions to be made about current and future financial commitments and obligations, resolving everything from simple questions about how things work to complex financial obligations competing for limited funds. There are the after-work socials, House Corporation meetings, meeting with the chapter executives and committees. Stop by and introduce yourself. House Corporation communications include telephone calls or meetings with vendors, contractors, local officials, the chapter consultant, and the international office. Consider how you might become involved this year. It takes time to get in the rhythm of the board and the activities that each of us is involved with or managing. Join us on the board and contribute your perspective during our regular board meeting time. You will find that there are opportunities to contribute in significant ways. Watch your email for invitations to chapter events (i.e., freshman initiation) and join us at the next after-work social in Omaha or Lincoln. We had a great alumni tailgate prior to the Rutgers football game. Stay in touch, follow your chapter on Facebook and the web. This is your opportunity to join again in the fraternal experience with members of the board and with the undergraduates. You can become involved and make a difference. I know that you will find involvement with the fraternity an exciting and rewarding experience. Contact Ryan Caldwell '98 at caldwelldelt@gmail.com or Jim Emanuel '79 at jemanuel@robseeco.com.
