THE FORGET-ME-NOT DELTA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI | SPRING 2018 Miles of Milestones Ahead Celebrating ΑΦ, Delta, and Women at Cornell S isters, as I write this note, a cold and snowy January has nearly finished and spring is just around the corner. Winter always takes me back to my days on the Cornell hill—those freshman year memories of sliding to rush parties in the slush whilst wearing high heels. What on earth were we all thinking? Despite the cold, Alpha Phis always offered warm welcomes, helping me to forget my frozen toes in lieu of having fun with my lifelong friends. As an alumna, I am grateful the same warm, welcoming spirit of sisterhood shelters the young women experiencing Cornell today. THE 130TH ANNIVERSARY OF DELTA'S FOUNDING A number of important milestones for women in higher education will occur over the next five years. Delta Chapter was founded in 1889, which means that 2019 will mark the 130th anniversary of our founding and of being on the Cornell campus continuously. This is a feat few other chapters can claim, and is a testament to the strength of our sisterhood and its enduring value over rapidly changing times. Our House Corporation Board is planning a celebration to mark this very special milestone. Be sure to visit the Cornell ΑΦ alumnae website at cornellalphaphi.org for details as they emerge. If you would like to help us organize the event, please reach out to me as we are always grateful for volunteers! 150 YEARS OF WOMEN AT CORNELL In 2020, Cornell will celebrate the 150th anniversary of women as students. The first woman to graduate from Cornell did so in 1873, and Alpha Phis like Edris Rice-Wray Carson '28 paved the way for women in higher education. Each woman builds upon the accomplishments of those who went before and leaves a legacy for those who followed. ΑΦ TO MARK 150 YEARS Another special milestone, the 150th anniversary of the founding of ΑΦ, will take place in 2022. The House Corporation Board looks forward to working with the active chapter and Delta alumnae to celebrate these milestones. A CENTURY OF THE DELTA HOUSE The Delta Chapter house was built in 1898 by an Alpha Phi, and Phis have lived there continuously ever since. On October 22, 2021, we will celebrate 100 years of owning this historic landmark. Over the past year, the bedrooms of the chapter house were refurnished and many of the wood floors refinished. The sprinkler system was repaired and the small memorial garden to the right side of the house was completed. We hope these small beautification and functionality projects will keep our home in optimal shape for the next 100 years! aoe, Kathy Miller '82 HCB Special Projects ksmiller3431@gmail.com Delta alumnae celebrate sisterhood in front of our chapter house. FAMILY BY FATE, SISTERS THROUGH ALPHA PHI B efore Karen Kemble Sachs '90 and Amy Sachs Yam '92 were sisters-in-law, they were sisters through Alpha Phi. Years later, Karen's daughter, Lauren Sachs '19, joined the sorority. Read below to learn how the sisterhood made such a profound impact on their family. Q: Why did you join Alpha Phi? Karen Kemble Sachs '90: I went through formal rush and really enjoyed the ladies I met at Delta Chapter. I felt most at home there. Amy Sachs Yam '92: I was not interested in joining a sorority when I first came to Cornell. My family hadn't really been involved in Greek organizations and my initial impression of sororities was that they were catty and cliquey. When I joined the Cornell marching band, I met some Greek women, who were my first exposure to sororities. They made a very lasting and positive impression. Lauren Sachs '19: I helped found the Kappa Delta Chapter of ΑΦ at the Stevens Institute of Technology. I have discovered that founding a chapter attracts a lot of ambitious women—women who have a desire to build a very rich history and create things. (Continued on page 2) President . . . . .
