Page 2 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, March 22 - March 28, 2018 ANNOUNCEMENTS The history of the Compost Collective and its partnership with the Foothills Farmers Mar- ket, Holly Oak Garden and Walmart… The Compost Collective is a small grass- roots group that collects kitchen scraps from residents of Shelby and the surrounding area. The organic waste goes into a 2-part compost system located next to the community garden which is located directly behind the gymnasi- um at Holly Oak Park. In 2015, a group consisting of Paul Eng- ster, Natalie Sloboda, Bambi Myers, Stacey Costner, Alex Meander, Hanah Zinn, Billy Roberson, Caleb Mellon and Eddie Wellm- on, collaborated together to come up with the structure of the Compost Collective. With the help of Kenneth Crews, Holly Oak Park & the surrounding community, Ron McCollum and two Foothills Farmers' Market managers, Angie Zon-Smith & Carol Maxwell, the group had a place and a means of collecting organic waste. The Foothills Farmers' Market (FFM) in Shelby provides a booth at the market for the Compost Collective (CC). In turn, the CC started collecting kitchen scraps in August of 2015 from FFM customers and a handful of coffee shops. The scraps consisted of: Fruit & Veggie Scraps, Coffee Grounds & Paper Fil- ters, Tea Bags, Egg & Nut Shells, Bread, and also Grass Clippings & Leaves. The group distributes 4-gallon & 3-gallon buckets (donated by the Walmart Bakery) to each FFM composting participant. Each Saturday the CC group members meet at the FFM and swap out the fi lled buckets with clean buckets. The full buckets are then brought to Holly Oak Park, and dumped into a compost pile behind the community garden. Once the kitchen scraps, along with layers of grass & leaves are decomposed, the compost is then added to the raised beds in the Holly Oak garden. Some participants swap out buckets each week, and some only once a month. Some participate year round, and some are season- al. Some continue to participate, and some quit after a few months. Some buckets are completely full, and some are only half full. The average that is turned in is about 2.75 gallons of kitchen scraps per bucket. The group has kept a log of composting par- ticipants and a tally of how many fi lled buckets (of kitchen scraps) that have been collected. From August 2015 to December 2017, the Compost Collective has collected 1384 buck- ets of kitchen scraps, with an estimated 3,086 gallons that didn't end up in the landfi ll. "The Compost Collective is empowering in- dividuals to slow down the process of fi lling up landfi lls and raising awareness across Cleve- land County about the importance of recycling nutrients back into the soil." - Paul Engster The group is small (currently consisting of Paul, Natalie, Bambi and 2 newer volunteers, Shepard McAninch and Robert Thompson) and they sometimes struggle with all the du- ties, so HELP is always appreciated! If any- one is interested in volunteering, whether it is swapping the buckets out at the Farmers' Market, help with dumping & cleaning the compost buckets, or working in the commu- nity garden, please contact them via call, text, email, or Facebook...
