While some wear capes and tights, others wear badges. Some wield gavels, and oth- ers wield stethoscopes. Now, firefighters are poised to heat up prime time, thanks to a new television series from one of the industry's most prolific producers. In Seattle, a team of fire- fighters form a bond like no other as they work and train together 24-7 in "Station 19," premiering Thursday, March 22, on ABC. A "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff, the en- semble drama follows dedi- cated firefighters as they face the challenges of their high-stress careers, while also navigating the ups and downs of their personal lives. The 10-episode series was created by award-winning "Grey's Anatomy" producer and writer Stacy McKee. It's produced by ABC Studios and Shondaland, while McK- ee, Shonda Rhimes ("Scan- dal"), Betsy Beers ("The Catch") and Paris Barclay ("Sons of Anarchy") serve as executive producers. "Station 19" follows a fa- miliar formula that's paid off for shows such as "Grey's Anatomy," which chronicles the lives of the doctors and nurses at the city's fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospi- tal. With Rhimes involved, fans of her hit medical show are likely eager to see some of its trademark high-intensi- ty drama and romance in the new firehouse series. Howev- er, during the 2018 TCA Win- ter Press Tour, McKee made it clear that her vision for the spinoff differs somewhat from "Grey's Anatomy," even though the firehouse is just three blocks away from the famed hospital. "Most of our characters are on site and in the middle of action sequences," McKee explained, "so there's a cer- tain level of adrenalin and energy that comes with that that you don't necessarily find in the same way at 'Grey's.'" Running into a burning building is not for the faint of heart, but a heroic few have the courage and com- passion to risk their lives to help others. It takes a special person to step up to such a task, and the characters in "Station 19" represent the best of the best. Jaina Lee Ortiz ("Rosewood") leads the cast as bold young fire- fighter Andy Herrera, who was practically raised in the firehouse by Capt. Pruitt Herrera (Miguel Sandoval, "Medium"), her father and boss. Sparks fly between Andy and Station 19's lieutenant, Jack Gibson (Grey Damon, "Aquarius"), a passionate and fearless firefighter. An- dy's close friend and confi- dant is Maya Bishop (Dan- ielle Savre, "Kaya"), a for- mer Olympic athlete who pushes herself to be the best. Their charming col- league Dean Miller (Okieri- ete Onaodowan, "Hamil- ton") is well aware of the appeal of a man in uniform and jumps at the chance to be a hero. In contrast, fire- fighter Travis Montgomery (Jay Hayden, "The Catch") is a rule follower who's widely regarded as the heart of the team. Victoria "Vic" Hughes (Barrett Doss, "Iron Fist") is the youngest member of the team, but the firehouse rookie is none other than "Grey's Anatomy's" Ben Warren, played by Jason George ("Off the Map"). Once an anesthesiologist, Warren is ready to tackle new challenges as a fire- fighter, but he soon discov- ers that emergencies in the field are vastly different from those in the hospital. Interestingly, Warren is married to "Grey's'" Miran- da Bailey (Chandra Wilson, "Accidental Friendship"), so there's a chance she'll pop up in an episode or two of "Station 19." She won't be the first "Grey's" star to ap- pear in the new firehouse se- ries, however — that honor goes to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo, "Moonlight Mile," 2002) herself. She appears in the pilot when Capt. Herrera is admitted to Grey Sloan. The hospital is, of course, al- ready a familiar place for Herrera, who was introduced to "Grey's" fans in an epi- sode that aired on Thursday, March 1. In it, she and War- ren rescued two boys from a house fire. With one boy's life literally resting in her hands, Andy and the doctors raced to save him. An episode in which the characters of a spinoff are in- troduced in the originating show is known as a "back- door pilot" in the television industry, and this isn't the first such episode for "Grey's Anatomy." In May 2007, the show also brought viewers to Oceanside Wellness Cen- tre in Los Angeles, where be- loved "Grey's" character Ad- dison Montgomery (Kate Walsh, "13 Reasons Why") took up residence in "Private Practice," the first spinoff of the medical drama. The show was a big hit, running for six seasons (2007 to 2013), and producers are hoping "Sta- tion 19" will match or even surpass its success. With any luck, ABC's new- est spinoff will last at least as long. Check in with some of Seattle's most dedicated firefighters in the special two-hour premiere of "Sta- tion 19," airing Thursday, March 22, on ABC. saving the day: 'station 19' puts the sizzle in shondaland's TgIT line-up Featurestory
