It's a very eye- opening experience to witness the volume of cases which come before District Court and Superior Court, held in Fayetteville. Recently, our Leadership Fayetteville class got to sit in with our area judges: Judge Toni S. King - District Court Traffic Court - FAYPD cases; Judge Edward A. Pone - District Court Family Court- Family Court cases to include custody, alimony, etc.; Judge Tiffany Whitfield - District Court DSS Court- children and Cumberland Co. DSS. Judge James F. Ammons, Jr. and Judge Gale M. Adams - Superior Court – hearing pleas in felony cases and other matters regarding felonies. They graciously allowed our group into their courtrooms, and took time to explain the judicial process we just witnessed. We also learned about pre-trial and diversion programs to ease the pressures on our overfull jails. Then our group got to see how it all begins – with the arrest. Capt. Robert Spatorico of the Fayetteville Police Department enabled the group to see how police officers are recruited and the extensive training they undergo before having a solo patrol. We saw three of the six canines and their handlers learning how they work as a team in law enforcement – finding missing persons, drugs, explosives and chasing down the bad guys. We saw how our SWAT team prepares for the unthinkable and were assured by the level of training and how well-equipped our city's team is. We toured the Forensics lab and were awed by fingerprints, ballistics, and other labor-intensive processes which, coupled with high technology, enable our courts to prosecute those same bad guys with hard evidence. Getting to know our community's leaders and the inner workings of our city and county is what Leadership Fayetteville is all about. City Police Chief Gina Hawkins started our day with leadership challenges and advice based on her own career in law enforcement. Our class of 22 business people and nonprofits are halfway through their 9-month program and will be giving back to the community through a service project. The cycle starts anew is September, so please consider being part of Leadership Fayetteville this Fall! GET TING TO KNOW OUR COMMUNITY'S LEADERS
