Fifty-five teams from seven states, Kansas, Maryland, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina participated at this year's Hog Happnin'. This was the first year the KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) sanctioned competition was held at Shelby City Park. The Hog Happnin' Committee praised the City of Shelby and the Shelby City Parks and Recreation for all their help in making the festivities a success. This year's Grand Champion team was "Two Old Men & A Grill" from neighboring Bessemer City. One our local teams "Mountain Magic", the Smoke on the Square team, dominated the "Anything But" category with a total of six awards. This year's Car & Cycle show was also fantastic. It featured some of the finest classic and extreme vehicles around. Hog Happnin' is a major contributor to the Children's Homes of Cleveland County, as well as several other charities. –M. A. Pictured; Co-Chairpersons Katie Haskin and Hayley Lowery took time to sit on Santa's knee at the beginning of the three day event. Sixty-four vendors were set up with an array of items. Santa photos were available by The Victorian Rose. Workers at the event are all volunteer and proceeds go to help fund The Clothing Room which has helped provide clothing for local students Pre-K through 12th grade since 1971. The League was founded in 1934 and their members give over 5,000 hours annually of volunteer service to Cleveland County. –M. A. Andrews Classic Lamp Gift Wrap Available The Exchange Club of Shelby honored David Cooper as an A.C.E. Award winner on October 8, 2012. The A.C.E. Award recogniz- es high school seniors that have Accepted the Challenge of Excellence by over- coming a personal or physical adver- sity, stayed in school, and worked hard to succeed. David is a senior at Crest High School. While dealing with a medical hard- ship, he has main- tained straight A's and has been accepted to attend Gardner-Webb University to study business administration after graduation. The Exchange Club pre- sented David with a certificate of recognition and $200. The A.C.E. Award is a program of the National Exchange Club. The Exchange Club of Shelby is a civic club serving all of Cleveland County. Club members volunteer to make our community a better place to live through service programs in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and the Prevention of Child Abuse.
