When Owana had part of her thy- roid removed; the doctors told her she'd never sing again. Owana said, "Oh ya?" and today she "can always pick-up on the harmony part" and prefers that to the lead. Cookie is the "taskmaster" when they're in the recording studio in Oregon. Their CDs feature only the sisters, no studio band or other musicians. They will have four or five different CDs for sale at their concert. The concert will feature Christmas and Gospel music, all written by Cookie. Bobbie's husband, Ken, will accom- pany them on bass guitar though they say they've asked him NOT to sing! He is a Special Forces Marine that served in Vietnam and the sis- ters say nothing scares him except going on stage. For the sisters, music is a calling and they say now is the time to give back. Bobbie and Ken go down to Mexico to work in a clinic each year. The three sisters perform for the VA hospital in Roseburg, Oregon, the VFWs, Senior Centers, the Gem and Mineral Club and the Alliance Church among other things. Cookie is going to be Mrs. Santa Claus for the Salvation Army Thrift Store. She and Forrest Noland, Santa Claus, are looking forward to riding the Quartzsite Fire Truck to deliver Christmas presents to local kids. Don't forget the concert on Friday, December 22, 6p.m. at the Alliance Church. at 6 p.m. for the first time in seven years the four sisters will be singing together here in Quartzsite at the Alliance Church. The sisters first sang in their fam- ily band, "The Little Folks Country Band". There's a nine year span from oldest to youngest and their voices blend as only sisters can. As Cookie, the oldest, says, "They're your sisters, you love them and you gotta be friends, 'cuz you know too much about each other!" At 10 years of age Cookie got her first guitar: 3 strings and 3 rubber bands. She wrote a Christmas song and played it on her 3 string guitar in church. The next Monday her Daddy took her to the music store and bought her a Gibson guitar. He said, "Don't you ever embarrass me like that again! " In 1972 she went to Nashville as a song writer. She was offered a dream job, but family obligations caused her to decline. In Denver at a 1983 National Convention, Boxcar Willy was playing and he needed a drummer so she played. After the show, the rest of his band went out partying. Boxcar Willy didn't drink and neither did she so they sat around and talked and he taught her to do the famous train whistle. She also played with Jeanie C. Riley and Freddie Hart. Cookie plays 6 instruments, saying, "I tried to play the fiddle but every time I do, the cat hides under the bed. Sometimes I wish I could join her!" SISTERS FROM PAGE 22
