My, how we humans can get so defensive and angry so quickly, nowadays. I know it seems that we're all in a social pressure cooker lately, but let's check our us vs. them attitude at the door, at least for a while. Watching the news is not sup- porting my serenity, that's for sure. So I return to simple tools learned while studying life coaching, which teaches us to incorporate our values into our life. But what exactly are "values?" Thomas Leonard, a pio- neer in the fi eld of life coaching. He jumped in his RV with his little dog "Fringe", and traveled the nation and Canada, sharing his fresh and inspired ways of seeing the world. I fi nd his defi nition very accurate: "Values are activities, preferences, or behaviors that you are naturally drawn to. Values are you. If there is a natural and uncomplicated pull, it's probably a value." Just make sure that you don't con- fuse wants or needs with values. Leonard further explains. Needs are resources, people, feel- ings, situations or environments that you must have in order to be your best. There's a sense of ur- gency with needs. Wants are what you enjoy having. Values fulfi ll you; wants provide gratifi cation. Wow! That's a lot to take in. By the way, in this context, we aren't using the word values in the same way as it's often used in the realm of politics, media, or religion, where it often refers to issues of morality. Core values can include morality, but the term as used here is more broad, having more to do with what we are drawn to. So what are your values? Are they the same as your neighbor? Prob- ably not, as we are all different and we all are so unique. Is a value something you did when you were 7 years old? Then it's probably a val- ue. I think we all could use a bit of refl ection of the meaning of values. It's not religious, taught by others, or argued about. Remember, Val- ues fulfi ll you. Simple, eh? " Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.: ~Mahatma Gandhi
