Quartzsite Police Chief William Ponce graduated from the FBI Na- tional Academy Program at Quan- tico, Virginia in September. The 269th Session of the National Acad- emy consisted 224 men and women from 48 states. Included in the class are members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Co- lumbia, 22 international countries, fi ve military organizations and six federal civilian organizations. Internationally known for its aca- demic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy, offers ten weeks of ad- vanced communication, leadership, and fi tness training for selected of- fi cers having proven records as pro- fessionals within their agencies. FBI leadership has recently adjust- ed the NA's curriculum to address a host of issues ranging from threats posed by homegrown extremists to tensions between police depart- ments and the communities they serve. National Academy students undergo a mandatory classroom leadership course designed partly to address the contentious issue of po- lice mistrust, which is front and cen- ter in several jurisdictions around the country. Infused into those leadership discussions are fi ndings outlined by the Obama Administra- tion's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which was commissioned in December 2014 with the goal of strengthening law enforcement and community relations nationwide. Chief Ponce was proud to share with his classmates that Quartzsite already has community programs implemented, such as Citizens On Patrol (COPS), Neighbor Watch and Explorers Programs. Chief Ponce said, "I hope to enhance community partnership and polic- ing programs," emphasizing a de- sire to provide more transparency to the residents of Quartzsite. "We need to all work together; and co- operation between agencies makes our jobs easier." Selected law enforcement leaders reside at the FBI Academy while attending the National Academy. The FBI facilitates their training, accommodations and meals at no cost to the attendees' organization. Chief Ponce was able to interact with his 224 classmates to discuss their broad knowledge of law en- forcement methods, practices and policies. The training and interac- tions will further the effectiveness & effi ciency of the Quartzsite Police Department. Since 1972, National Academy stu- dents have been able to earn under- graduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia du the ac- creditation by the university of the many courses offered. A total of 50,365 graduates now represent the alumni of the FBI National Academy since it began in 1935. | FBI Quartzsite Police Chief William Ponce graduates from FBI Academy
